Reference Track

Hi Trance Addict Brothers,

Reference Tracks and how to use them?
What is your go to song / track to help make your music?

I never do Reference song / track but I hear it helps to get your music done.

Trance House Drum & Bass Brakes EDM

For me, reference tracks have been a great tool for training ears / improving mixes.

My equipment isn't the greatest...My room isn't the greatest...But I think it helped a lot learning what stellar mixes sounded like, even in a mediocre room, on budget equipment.

As far as one's own musicality, I think they can be somewhat of a double edged sword...Good for inspiration for sure...But ya gotta be mindful to retain your own unique flavor.

Dave Tipper for overall mix quality...Seriously just an underrated next-level album(s)...Course I think the dude has about 20k in studio monitors alone...So I'd hope it'd sound good.

Tipper - Jettison Mind Hatch

Tipper - Forward Escape

And for what seems to be quite clinical mixes and sub...Koan sound is great. It's my understanding that both were audio engineers...And the meme is like : "This is what happens when sound engineers make music..."

Koan Sound - Polychrome

Koan Sound - Forgotten Myths

I have one of those koan sounds tracks in one of my playlists.

I showed it to a few people, they say it sucks. its groovy and sound design on point.

but honestly, I feel like an adequate production standard is quite prolific in every genre these days. It doesnt take long to find a damn good track on youtube.

which is a knock on/to myself; was mixing for so long but cant even fit one in myself, but to be fair the equipment I was using was so bad, and I had no idea what a reference flat sound was; it was impossible to tell back then.

im more keen on inspirational tracks than reference tracks, as I have none of that flowing in me. Life is escaping me in general.

low bit rate warning

I enjoy this mix a lot. the way they mix the wall of reverb and transition it to large buzzy synths, not sure if bandpassed or notched. there is this low end pressure thats smeared throughout, that completes the balance. then the bass is perfectly melded in with lots of eq, but it sounds natural. sound design is very good for the time as its about 20 years old.

I'll often put a nice track that I like and want to soundlike right into the mixer, and turn it on/off to compare. But I've also done a lot of tracks that I didn't master until it was complete, so the reference track came in at the end.

But you can use whatever track you like, really. Anything that sounds good to our ears. Putting a track down for a couple weeks helps a lot, it helps your brain forget so you can listen to it with fresh ears.
