Well, this is going to be problematic for me. I’ve probably listened to this mix ten times in the past few weeks, because it is absolutely fantastic and great for keeping energy up, which was necessary when working on my dissertation. However, because I’ve mostly listened to it during my dissertation, I worry it’ll be associated with that forever… We’ll see, several months from now!
I wasn’t sure how I felt about the non-ambient opening, as that seems almost a necessity these days, but the slow build-up was nice; loved the airy vocals etc. I really need to look more into Kompakt. Been meaning to since we saw Mayer, this is just another reminder.
I still think the whole ‘Michael & Levan Feat Stiven Rivic’ name is ridiculous, but ‘Once’ is yet another great remix from them – and another great reminder that people who say there is no great progressive being made anymore are fucking imbeciles. Absolutely love ‘Air’ by Relaunch, as well. Will definitely be stealing that track if/when I make a modern progressive set. ‘Disruption’ is another epic example of progressive to shut people the fuck up. Such a dreamy breakdown.
I remember we discussed Kintar a few weeks ago (months ago?) in MD, so I was curious how this track would be, when I saw it on the TL. Unfortunately, this did end up being my least favourite track in the mix. The production is great, but I find the vocal quite annoying. I see it’s role in the mix, programming wise, I just dislike her voice! Amusing, since that seems to be a favourite track of other commentators. And I know it wasn't annoying the first few times I heard it, just with repeat listening...
Anyways, Atony Grant and Lank deliver two more good tracks, before we get into the highlight of the mix for me. I’ve never really delved too much into Hybrid, but this remix of ‘Formula of Fear’ is fantastic (that guitar is a killer) as is their remix of Guy J. Nice to see another good release from Bedrock. I’ve found myself surprisingly liking a decent number of their stuff the last three or four years, when I’ve gone back into the catalogue a bit. Not that Guy J has put out much disappointing material. A filthy remix…
MSZ rarely disappoints, either, and he continues that trend here. Nice dreamy prog, with a good backbone. Keeping up those dreamy PLUR vibes with another killer from Relaunch. Will for sure be looking into his back catalogue soon. Timewave destroys it – again, as usual. I’m sure he’s made some bad tracks… I just haven’t heard them, yet. And ‘Birdshock’ is a perfect closer. ‘Dreamy as fuck,’ or, ‘PLUR-tastic,’ are the technical terms, I believe.
All-in-all, another excellent prog mix. I hope it won’t forever be associated with my dissertation for me, since it is extremely enjoyable, and a wonderful retort to those who say no good music is still being made. Top-shelf stuff, Jack – well done
