I'm a score mix engineer by trade so probably a bit more picky than most when it comes to detail and response, therfore "DJ" headphones always have sounded too hyped or hifi for me.

I liked the 700's becuase they sounded nice (in a hifi way) but not too much. You could never trust the bass response on them for engineering but they were comfy and gave good isolation, with decent detail.

The 7509HD's were like the 700's more refined bigger brother. great bass response without that big sweep at 250 and the highs are just super clear. I have to be careful if ever using them for production because I hear more with them than I do with my monitors and if you're not careful, you start mixing for minutiae that no one apart from dogs will hear lol. But I suppose that's one of the reasons that I love them for DJ'ing - it's the detail, so if you need to mix for the hats, or some weird rhythmical thing, the detail allows you to pick out that sound.

My only issue is that after 7 years the headband and ear cups started having the faux leather come off, but they're user replaceable and it's really not bad going for that amount of use.

Whether you end up with the Pioneers or the sony's you're in a good place.

Thanks for the help Rann. I found some close by and I'm going to go see them tomorrow after I get my check. Same place has the Pioneers. Now you have me curious

I played the MDR-V700 game for several years. Them breaking got really tiring- they are flawed in design and will always crack.

HDJ-1000s were enough hassle (another silly design flaw- went through 5 pairs in as many weeks, all replaced under warranty) to put me off HDJ2000s, and knowing pioneers current build standards, that is probably a wise thing.
The HDJ-C70 are a straight rip off of Sennheiser HD-25s - the prototype I tried last summer sounded good, and would be your best bet if you want pioneer.

Senn HD-25s- never liked them personally. Cups are too small and they sit on top of the ears. Never liked the sound either- bass is horrible on them, although I appreciate that is a subjective opinion.
HD-25SP are the same, just with a worse headband.

I would suggest you get some Sony MDR-7506 / MDR-V6 and don't look back - they are a slightly smaller/less bulky version of the 7509s (which I also have) as namechecked by Mr Rann above, and are still found in most major studios to this day.

It was sasha that turned me onto them many years ago, and they still piss on the rest IMHO, probably because they were never designed for DJ use. Every part is replaceable, they are professional grade, and will last you a lifetime (although if you replace too many parts, it will be a bit triggers broom).
They are also an utter bargain.

Thanks for the input. I can't wait to try out the Sony's tomorrow. I don't understand how all these guys make these amazing sounding headphones yet fail to make them more durable. In the long run this makes people hate the company itself and makes us (the consumers) biased in a negative way. What called my attention about the Pioneers is that the sides are made of magnesium and not plastic. If the Sony's wouldn't break so easy I'd never leave them. The sound on them is IMO perfect. How's the construction on the Sony 7509's and 7506's?

What are you using these headphones for? You mentioned sound quality and monitoring in your original post but the v700 doesnt have that. You seem to want a specific sound are interested in products that are somewhat pandered to bass / dj heads with slightly higher bass attenuation. If you want true monitoring you dont want closed-back system.

It all depends how much money you want to spend. Have deep pockets and dont dj, dont need sound isolation? Get the Sennheisher HD 650, you'll hear music the way its 100% supposed to be heard.

Have only 100 to spend? The Sony V6/7506 are amongst my favourite headphone due to build quality, but it doesnt have the best sound signature. The audio technica m40x is superior.

Judging by what you seem to be conveying in this thread, I would just get the Audio technica m50x, it has that bass attentuation you're looking for, and the build quality is great. The m50x had a really good run in the last few years for a reason. Not saying its the best thing in its price range anymore, but still a contender. If you want to spend less, I recommend the 7506, it all depends -- you usually get what you pay for in performance parts.

Small caveat, the sony v6 / 7506 are technically the same headphone but not really, they have a slightly different sound signtuare, im not exactly sure why, if its the drivers or the way they're built, but the one I think you'd enjoy more would be the latter because of bass, myself personally I'd enjoy the v6 due to neutrality. These are relatively cheap cans, and they are colored but not as much as many many other alternatives for the same price.

I like the Sony sound on the V700's. Im not a dj but i do in the bedroom for fun. And i think the V700 are great for dj'ing.. I love the sound and a lot of the local dj's down here were using the Sony's at one point when i started playing around with the music.. So i got them and loved them. I didn't want to spend a crap load but i'm going to anyways. I know myself and i know i'll be pissed if i didn't get something i really like. And i really don't want heavy bass headphones. My buddy has the Beats dj headphones and i don't care for that heavy bass.. I don't listen to hip hop either so they were useless. The Sonys are pretty well balanced.

I found a pair of new Sony V700's for $125 in the box. I listened to the Pioneers and they were amazing. BUT the bass was a tad bit too much for my taste. But I wouldn't mind having a pair some day just for the fuck of it.

edit: Its crazy what you find in those small record stores still around in Miami I walk in just to go through some vinyls and there and behold on top of the records was the box with the 700's

Wat?

you bought the same headphones that broke on you 3 times prior?

Good god man are you really that silly? That $25 you juts saved means in one years time you'll be shelling out for another pair of headphones when the 700's inevitably crumble again.

I mean when Freak tells you that Sasha told him to be them, you obey the man like

@MSZ - you're right the V6's and the 7506 are nearly the same headphone, and Sony have been incredibly opaque as to the difference but as I understand it's an over so slightly different driver. Some also say the 7506's are marginally built better.

@freak - I totally agree about the HD-25's. I've never understood the attraction; they sit on top of your ear and the bas was always muddier than glasontbury. The headband fucking hurt my head every time I used them too.

The Senn HD650 are fucking lovely but shit, I really don't know many non-audiophiles that will drop $500 on a pair of headphones.

I may do another comparison next time I'm at the massive guitar center in Hollywood but it will probably just confirm how much I love my 7509hd's lol.

I like the HD 25s. I don't have Dumbo ears though.

So you're 6'4" and have a tiny dick and tiny ears? You would not do well on my desert island.

I honestly don't know how you tolerate the HD25's; they're like $150 economy airline headphones. They're not small enough to be in-ear and they are not large enough to cover the giant sonic flaps I call ears.

I'm more like a meaty batfink.
