Yeah, Techs have always held their value. When I left the UK for the states, I was able to sell them for a profit and then buy the m5g's for less (because the US is cheaper for this stuff). Win all around.

Then you got really fucking lucky. Right now there are half a dozen PAIRS of good condition CDJ1000's Mk3's going for less that a thousand. Yes, less than $1000 for TWO.
The CDJ1000's took a massive hit when Pio brought out the CDJ900 which was in the same price bracket but had USB, LAN, Quantise etc.
I was thinking about getting 900's but I'll probably wait until Pio stupidly bring out yet another CDJ model so that the 900 drops in price even further.

the ddj sz might be up your alley. i might buy one to do mobile gigs |
I just can't do the controller thing. I've played with that and it's just too much of a toy. I also want to integrate with my M5G's and it gets messy trying to do it with that. A mate of mine was between that unit or CDJ's - he was looking at $1500 more to go the CDJ route but when he played with them side by side he said the difference in feel was a no brainer and bought the CDJ's.

cdj 500 (the big one you have) was their first top-line model so probably had the best buttons etc. at that time. it was also suppose to take over the denons established dual rack-cdj marked so it had to be good/better. also people made better stuff before. the next cdj500 (smaller one) was a little worse, then cd100 was even worse. cdj800 was a step up again using the same jog as the first cdj1000 only with less resolution, and worse dac i believe so it was pretty durable i guess, but no oldschool cdj 500. the cdj350-400 and similar is in my eyes on cdj100 level but with more functionality.

That's all true. I've still got an old CDJ100 and although it did go a bit strange a while back (wouldn't hold pitch so I have to replace one of the PCB's) the buttons and rest of it are still going strong. It'r got to be at least 12 years old - I've had it for 7 years and I bought it second hand off a guy who had found it in his attic when he bought an old house. Even those were built pretty well.

thanks man, i dont think i can justify shelling out for even 2nd hand 850s for occasional mixing - guess id have to try out the 350s and see what the jog wheel is actually like
|
Try the 350's and if you like them, then they;re still decent. I'm probably going to sell my 800 and get a pair of used $850's - if you get lucky you find a pair for around $1000 which I'm willing to pay for just occasional home DJ use. I just can't go down to a 350 because once you've had the proper job wheel, you can't go back.

The sound quality was so tiny and puny like maybe because of the DAC it uses. I sold them instantly. Now the nexus however has an upgraded Wolfson DAC and better power supply. I'm in love with it (nexus) and thank god i didn't settle down for anything inferior. |
Dude, I said this in the other thread, but it's in your mind. Don't get me wrong the 2000N are great but the difference in audio quality is minimal, to the point I don't believe you could ID them in a blind A/B.
They both use wolfson DAC chips - one is like $3 more than the other. It's all solid state tech from the same company, even using the same chip maker.
You're also listening to (most likely) badly mastered trance in your bedroom (albeit with some very good kit). It's not like you're monitoring an SACD of Royal Philharmonic recorded at Air Studios with an array of vintage Neumans.
