Ziptnf - Rave Legends [happy hardcore classics]

So yeah, this is a controversial genre. When I thought of "rave/hardcore", I immediately thought of the happy hardcore movement in the 90's. This genre is one of the reasons PLUR and kandi kids took the rave scene by storm. Most people dislike happy hardcore because of the legitimately absurd track structures, high tempos and high pitched vocals. However, a lot of people enjoyed the happy vibes and fun melodies and made it a lovable genre to dance and rave to. People familiar with happy hardcore will recognize a majority of this tracklist, as some of them are exceedingly obvious choices.

I have a feeling that not many people will take the time to listen to this because they don't like the genre, and I don't blame them. But I hope some of you check it out, as a lot of these are the best tracks the genre can showcase. This mix took me back to my early teens when I downloaded these off Kazaa and Morpheus.

Brisk & Trixxy - Eye Opener [Slammin' Vinyl] (1997)
Scott Brown & Gillian Tennant - Every Time I Close My Eyes [Evolution] (1999)
UFO - Deep Inside [New Infinity] (2001)
Force & Styles - Follow Me (Styles & Breeze Remix) [Raver Baby] (2004)
DJ Ham, Demo, Justin Time - Here I Am [JAL Premium] (1996)
Nakatomi - Children Of The Night [Jive] (1996)
Hyperactive - Let Me Play [Blatant Beats] (1998)
Sy & Demo - Stay With Me [Vital Element] (2000)
T.O.T.T - Get Up (Airplay Edit) [Do It Yourself] (1995)
4 Tune Fairytales - My Little Fantasy [Pengo] (1996)
Trixxy - Sunrise [Blatant Beats] (1999)
Diverse & Gammer - The Spirit [Maximum Impact] (2007)
Styles & Breeze - Heartbeats (Scott Brown Remix) [Raver Baby] (2005)
Scott Brown - Elysium Plus [Evolution Plus] (2002)

Ziptnf - Rave Legends (1:02:06) 142MB ~320kbps

Enjoy!

I've listened to lievez' and mr.mystery's mixes a couple of times now.

Starting with the psychill mix:
I think psychill is a bit of a confusing genre in a sense and it's a term that get's thrown around a lot. From your mix I got a mangling of two different interpretations, one being more conventional chill music with a splash of orientalism and the other being more or less slowed down psytrance. It wasn't always obvious to me what's supposed to be the binding factor between these songs, it covered a lot of ground and doing so in a very short time may have hurt it's story a bit.
It was a good enough listen though, and I think you did all right in how you approached the mixing. In chill mixes a certain melodic or tonal continuity is often more important then a rhythmic one anyway.

The Liquid-funk mix surprised me by how much I was enjoying it.
It's a form of music that I feel has a lot of potential but in mixed form a lot of the time the more elegant subtleties of the music tend to get lost in the constant barrage of drum hits after a while even though the genre's drumcanvas is clearly not as up-front as we see in other forms of breakbeat music. For this I feel a mix of the stuff needs to alleviate some of that, which this one did for me because there's a decent bit of variety and a lot of intact songstructures in there. Really good stuff.

My mix is forthcoming, either today or tomorrow. I've done a take but didn't like the outcome when I listened to it so I'm going try again. Also then try to have a listen to some of the other mixes. Been busy with a few other things and struggled with a phone that seem to hog memory space all the time.

Thanks for the feedback. I spent a lot of time sifting through endless waves of samey tracks with the same drum loops repeated over and over in order to find something standing out from the mass.
I feel this genre uses a lot of the same aesthetics as progressive breaks, which is a very dear genre for me, so I enjoyed making this mix very much.

So the name of the game was New York Hard House and as anyone noted it was the most debated of the genres, not to me as it's a genre that I love. But not one that I generally play, or as often as i'd like, as my favourite tracks of the genre are utterly bombastic (for instance Vicious' Remixes of Veronica and the Thunderpuss Remixes of Whitney) or sound to much like epic trance (a few Hex Hector Remixes come to mind). For me this genre is more known as Circuit and I was already thinking in those directions but when Mr. Game+Watch had his suggestions into that field it was a slam dunk decision to make it so.

The hardest part was to find something to start the whole thing with as I didn't want to go that full on directly, especially as it becomes really over the top eventually. But I used a hardbag-track that would work perfectly and then it was smooth sailing from there. I decided to use the dubs instead of the main vocal mixes on a few of the most obvious cuts (like Veronica, Whitney & Kim English) as it would be more interesting. It also gives it a different edge as it becomes a bit darker on those cuts and I wanted the end section to be more intense and boshy to contrast the more uplifting first half.

Uncle Montana - Circuitry 20140926

Love To Infinity - Pray For Love (Episode IV Mix) | Mushroom
Wayne G - Twisted (Danny Tenaglia Dub) | FFRR
D'Influence - Midnite (Doctor Scratch's Paradox Stomp Mix) | EastWest
Notorious B.I.G. - Mo' Money Mo' Problems (Razor & Guido Remix) | Bad Boy
Jody Watley - Off The Hook (Soul Solution Remix) | Atlantic
Ayumi Hamasaki - Trauma (Thunderpuss Dub) | Rhythm Republic
George Morel - A Walk Through N.Y.C. | Strictly Rhythm
NG3 - Tell Me (J.Hagman Dub) | Foundation
Missy Elliott - Get Your Freak On (Superchumbo's Superfreakon) | Elektra
Lula - The DJ, The Music & Me (James Andersen Remix) | Star 69
iiO - At The End (Johnny Vicious Remix) | Made
Kim English - Unspeakable Joy (Razor & Guido Dub) | Nervous
Veronica - Let Me Go... Release Me (Johnny Vicious Dub) | H.O.L.A.
Charlotte - Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (Junior Vasquez Remix) | Nervous
Whitney Houston - It's Not Right But It's Not Okay (Thunderpuss Dub) | Arista
Tamia - Stranger In My House (Barry Harris Remix) | Elektra

Cheers, hopefully the result will be good to your ears. I certainly enjoyed doing this mix. One of the tunes that I was stoked about playing was that Biggie-remix. I was actually digging in a second hand-store in the southern suburbs of Stockholm about a month ago and found the CD-single for "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems".

This is one of those items I would have bought anyway but it's been on my radar ever since I saw it on Discogs a few years ago, because of it's sort of odd nature of pure rap records (sort of) that received house-remixes. I love those kind of juxtapositions and especially when they were done pre-Ableton. Especially as most of them cut out the rap and keep the sung R&B-esque hook only or dips in bpm in a breakdown to have a bit of the rap.

Another remix that does both is Hani's remix for Jay-Z's "Can't Knock The Hustle" where the most common version only includes Mary J Blige's vocal. But there is a second mix that Hani released recently on his website where Jay-Z's rap is included in a dip down bpm breakdown. This Biggie remix does that as well and but the single also included a no-rap edit which I played and even on that, I edited out a small drop for better flow on the mix-out.

It was tempting to play the Jonathan Peters remix of DMX's "Party Up" as well but I couldn't make it work in this mix. This remix actually keeps more of the rap and works as the tempo on the original is not 95 bpm or slower.

although I'm not into NY Hard House like I was 3 or 4 years ago, I enjoyed the mix. you had a lot of tracks that were slightly on the commercial side with heavy emphasis on the diva vocalist. there's nothing wrong with any of that as that's what NY hard house mostly sounded like. I was just more accustomed to listening to the raw, uncut type of NY hard house that came straight from the underground such as Atom Bomb, an early example of NY hard house from 1993.

I enjoyed the mix though.

I'm done as well now. This was originally meant to be a fun mixtape-like affair, where I'd go through a bunch of old stuff that has been sampled throughout the years by all genres utilising breakbeats. Then montana messaged me on Facebook and said that wasn't what he meant by funky breaks, but rather "breaks" as pioneered by labels like Skint, Fingerlickin' and Bolshi, which is the type of breaks I was never all that enthusiastic about. So, in the end, I gathered handful of tracks from the mid-late 90s, with a few oddities mixed in for good measure. That's about as fancy as I could be bothered to make the mix this time around. Beatmixing this in Traktor was an absolute nightmare, but it should be tolerable now, after a couple of attempts.
