First off, welcome back man. I don't think I've seen you post in these subs in years and you have to be one of the most oldschool on here.
You can use the line in on your laptop. It won't be amazing quality by any means, but it should suffice.
You probably need to go in to windows and check your audio settings (line in, instead of mic input if needed, make sure it's not muted etc), and then go in to the preferences in Soundforge and select your onboard/built in line input.
Using the asio4all driver will probably help with latency but if you want better quality and options, then go for an external audio interface. Even a $100 should get you something usable, $250 will get you something very decent and $800+ will get you in to pro territory.

hey rann. yeah i dont post as much as i used to to. although i still put mixes up here regularly.i mostly lurk in the amateur producer section a lot looking for amateur stuff to put in my new mixes. but im still here plugging along and making mixes and playing out. i actually opened up for kyau and albert a couple of months ago.
i mostly stopped posting here regularly when they discussed but decided not to sub out the new york forum with a virginia,d.c. and maryland section. since thats where im from and putting mixes and posting events in the new york forums was no chance of exposure to the events going on around my way. but im making it more of a point to post here as this is where i cut my teeth. as you can see by my avatar i have been here for a looong time lol.
as for my problem, ive deduced i may not have a line in on my laptop as ive checked for it and it doesn't show up. its not a fancy laptop and i think what PivotTechno posted is probably what i need, as i just need something for recording mixes in 192 to 320 quality.
