Rumour of a new Technics DJ Turntable on its way...

Technics have dropped a hint that it may be ready to start making decks again!

They also showed off a much unfinished prototype at IFA 2015

Nice to hear, but sadly, I think they are going to be making audiophile hifi stuff, not DJ equipment. The market is much bigger and the margins are healthier.

But if they do a 1210 with integrated control data I might as well give them my bank details right now.

Just seen this on RA. Lots of comments about the design. I think they'll eventually get back into the DJ biz sometime but very excited about the return and newer technology.

Apparently though it's not a rumor - One of the guys at Technics is on the record stating this will be the successor to the 1210 throne. It may take a couple of years to actually get released, and they may well cost $1,000, maybe even $1500 each, but the cost of the nexus 2000 at $2000 didn't really stop every club and working DJ from buying them.

If they actually nail (and I mean really get it right) the integration of digital media functionality in a Vinyl turntable, this will kill Serato and Traktor overnight, and could quite possibly do for DJing what Technics did 30 years ago with the initial release of the 1200.

Please don't fuck it up Technics

We can only hope that Technics get this right, Pioneer tried with their deck but its just not as good as the old 1200/1210s.

Again, the cost factor is not that important to those of us serious about our DJing, I know I paid around £1400 each for my CDJ 2000s plus more for the mixer and headphones etc etc.

If the new decks are as rugged as the old ones, then spending £1000 or so each is a worthwhile investment.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. Pioneer actually had the chance to do something meaningful but screwed it up. I really don't get it - it's not that hard to test a product, just give it some epxerienced DJ's let them abuse to for a few weeks then give it to the guys that mod and fix TT's for a living and you'll very quickly find it's flaws and get useful feedback.

I agree though about the price point; there's really no way that Technics can make a high quality turntable now for the same prices that they used to sell 1210's for, but given the going rate for top end CDJ's $2k or 1400quid, I think there would be a market for a similar priced Turntable, especially as 1210's last 25years+ if cared for.

My only worry at this point is that they don't go digital with it - by that I mean put in a DAC with a digital RIAA curve so it's a line level out, and then do other silly shit like have a digital pitch. Of course, if they do integrate controll data such as postion and speed etc, some part of it will still have to be digital, but I just pray to god they don't fuck up the analog signal path path for vinyl.

Ideally it would be an analogue Turntable with a usb port for the positional data.

If they do that and make a solid deck that tracks well, it will be a sure fire hit.

Feedback is a VERY appropriate word for the pioneers, at frequencies that the 1200s just do not do....I have to make some quite heavy reductions at really weird frequencies to get them to stop howling, even with isonoes and my usual tricks. They are also very heavy also compared to a 1200, and I cant work out exactly why- given the underside is one piece of plastic and it is more or less a single PCB.

I did give my honest feedback on the prototypes, and it was completely ignored, much as my feedback on previous pioneer gear has been.
A huge disappointment and a massively wasted opportunity imvho.

Would be cool if they got back into the market at least in some capacity as vinyl has made a bit of a comeback, especially amongst the hipsters.

You probably saw it before but here's the video from a thread a couple of months ago where this guy did a full teardown and got some way in to figuring out why they resonate so badly every though they are markedly heavier than technics (in essence, they put the weight in the wrong place).
