The Rules

Participants will suggest a genre along with signing up. All genres will be randomly assigned amongst participants. The Genre Challenge will consist of a 45 minute to 120 minute mix, left to your own interpretation of the assigned genre, which will be posted after sign-ups are over. There are no prizes. All entries should be uploaded to your favorite file hosting site and posted after the sign-up date and before the due date. All participants should make an effort to listen to and review each mix that has been posted.

IF YOU SIGN UP AND DO NOT DO YOUR MIX, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE REST OF THE COMPETITIONS!!!

Sign-ups will last one month, starting today and lasting through SEPTEMBER 1st, @ 12 AM GMT. Simply enter your name and the genre you want someone else to play. I will assign genres at the end of the sign-up period and the mixing will begin. This challenge ends OCTOBER 3rd17th @ 12 AM GMT.

THERE WILL BE ONE VETO AND ONE WILDCARD. Before signups end, the genre to be vetoed will be discussed amongst participants. Whichever genre gets vetoed will be replaced by the wildcard. If you get assigned a wildcard, you will be able to choose whatever genre you'd like (be creative, not predictable).

Don't list a genre that is too weird, obscure, or specific.

When a contestant draws the genre you selected, it is YOUR responsibility to ensure they know what type of artists to base their selections off of. Be sure to give them plenty examples. But don't flood this thread with YouTube links. Keep that in a PM.

You may choose to drop out before the sign-up dates end, but once the challenge begins you cannot drop out.

Well count me in as a listener, but I don't really feel like I'm experienced enough with a variety of styles to be a dj yet. Maybe next time.

I wish I could participate, but all I have is my vinyl collection. I can't DJ digitally atm due to the lack of a soundcard.

I think the "NY" prefix is needed simply to distinguish the genre "hard house" a bit, as it can refer to somewhat different types of music in different regions of the world. In the UK, for instance, hard house is associated with Tidy Boys, Tripoli Trax and the rest of the church of Tony de Vit...



..whereas in the US, it's associated with the likes of DJ Bam Bam and Mark V & Poogie Bear, who pretty much only focused on beating the shit out of their 909s:



So narrowing the field a bit is definitely needed when suggesting "hard house".

I won't sign up to mix just yet, as I'm not quite sure if I'll have time to participate in the coming months.

Sand Leaper - yup the examples you've shown of Hard House are more of the Chicago style (DJ Bam Bam, DJ Deeon)... the NY style is heavily tribal-influenced, though with more screeching divas and extended drum buildups. Junior Vasquez, Jonathan Peters, Razor N Guido - are the big names in this genre.

Heh, that's the first time I've ever heard the term "hard house" used about Junior Vasquez and all that Twilo-inspired percussion thwacking that TRIBAL America and Twisted put out. I always thought this was where the term "tribal house" first originated, but oh well. Goes to show how little I kept tabs on that stuff.

it's obscure on this site that's for sure. I could count with only one hand the amount of people who dig NY Hard House on this site, and I was one of them. outside of TA, there's a ton of it on youtube and in real life, it was obviously huge in New York City back in the day. Based on his tracklist archive, Sasha played a lot of it circa 1994-1995 and featured Junior Vasquez's famous remix on Northern Exposure.

It should go without saying that a genre shouldn't be nominated unless a sufficient quantity of it is easily accessible online in digital format, and that should be demonstrated at the nomination phase.

oh to add that to the discussion, NY-style Hard House is also synonymous with what is called Circuit. A term that comes from the Circuit parties that was popular in the gay community and the type of music was played there.

y'all are posting some pretty specific things, that are not open to interpretation in any way. and adding any regional modifier to a genre is making it obscure AND specific.
