So what's your go-to delay unit you're using? Digital? Analog? Both? What brand and model?
Since the assumption here is that hardware is better which is where I stand also. I'm using a D-Two T.C Stereo Digital Delay, got it for 120$ Now, it's time to kick things up to speed Technically.
I've owned a handful of hw delays and reverbs over the years for my studio and they're just not all practical for my workflow. I'm using mostly EchoBoy, but will probably pick up Valhalla Delay soon and use it everywhere, just like their reverbs.

Well, they work very practically for me on my high-end setup. I had. an eventide timefactor pedal and sold it. I wondered where all warmth mojo in my tracks went. Got my D-two never went software again..especially for $120 $ b stock which is cheaper then echoboy and I also put my echoboy up for sale on KVR along with filter freak,
🦉 I use MIDI delays or duplicate tracks & physically delay them. You have more control that way, say for example when a chord change may result in discordant notes.

Hey Cryo, if you still have a hardware delay effect unit hanging around I suggest plug it in. This time make sure you're going SPDIF or AES "in & out" from your interface so no conversion required from your VST's or hardware synths.

Nearly 40 years of making music and that never once crossed my mind
🦉 You're being sarcastic right? If it didn't cross your mind, then you'd have just stated that. Making an emphasis on your 40 years experience means sarcasm. Don't we all wonder what those weird connectors are at the back of gear--"Doesn't look like my dick will fit, so I should check the manual." Anyhoot, using the analog connectors means a slightly grungier sound & extra latency, where latency equals moar delay, which equates to moar delay bang for your buck. Plus the antennae-like quality of audio cables means you may have recorded signals from ET. You're completely missing out on this magic when you interface digitally-direct. Missing out on all that mojo, man! Hoot-hoot.

Nah, Dave's gotta point, every DAW handles midi clock differently I think and for me only one daw the External Delay worked best was logic and thats justs that.
I find Fabfilter timeless to have more character then alot of stuff out there. My trial is almost over, so I will be getting that 2nd hand.
