Kick/Bass Timing

In some tracks the timing between kick and bass is just perfect.
There is like a sort of symbiosis that makes them relate to each other. The kick hits at that right instant, just in the perfect moment to say "hello", I'm here, on every first beat in a bar. The bass is there also and have that call and response relation.

This is what I have problems to get right. Specifically the timing of a kick hit. I work with audio files instead of with midi so that might be complicating the things, however, even if I drag back and forth the sample for hours I still can't get it to hit in that perfect moment.

My interface is working with 7 to 9ms of delay. Do you think that might be a something that tricks my perception of the whole thing?

I'm sure that's not required. Maybe my reference would be more important here, but just for your pleasure:

Sorry, I don't know how to embed a smaller version of the player.

clay, you're simply dumb. You already tried that the other time and it didn't work. I check the waveform through Audition every time before playing any audio coming from suspicious low life subjects like you.

I see you're still butthurt from that time which means my comment was really spot on. Truth hurts, loser.

What are we supposed to hear wrong? Snare/clap sounds a little off though, but it doesn't really annoy that much

Set PDC to on,

Audio is always more accurate than midi

If the issue still happens and is regular, it is probably a bussing issue were a plugin is throwing off the delay compensation.

Otherwise, there is really no reason

Your buffer latency will only matter if using external synths in direct playback.

I think perhaps the issue is more the sounds and now the tail influences your perception of the rhythm,

Use a tool like lfotool or cableguys volume to craft the levels so that they work together,

Nothing wrong, just not perfect as I wish it to be.

Here is a reference track regarding this issue.

The kick hits at the right moment and is in perfect timing in relation to the bass. I can't really get that perfect marriage between the two.

I've been tweaking today the compressor settings and am getting closer but still not perfect.
Definitely the attack plays a huge role in the way we perceive the kick and its timing.
I'm sure I'll get there, is just a matter of time.

Suppose you're refering to audio quality? Or maybe both...

I generally don't buss my kicks.

Thanks.

That made me think. In fact the body/tail of the kick shouldn't be ignored in the way I perceive it.

I'm using every kind of volume shaping manipulators. I got closer today so will definitely keep working on until I get it they way I want it to.

I'm a maniac on these issues. If I can't get it perfect I can't move on.

You're making a big mistake if you direct your attention solely on the kick. Bass plays a determinant part which affects your perception of that timing correlation you're after.

as clooney says, its mainly release times.

but in your reference example also: the bass isn't really a bass, it's a mid bass.

it hits on every 16th note and has the first of each four sidechained quite hard (yours doesn't)

your clap is slowing the whole thing down, not so much the bass end.

- release times.

Release time of the kick you mean? The tail?
