Question Best standalone option for mp3 mixing

Im fed up of using Traktor and want to go back to mixing with cdj style decks
whats the best option here? something like a used cdj400?
Not wanting to spend too much money but want something decent all the same
Needs to have a USB input for a memory stick, not going back to burning CDs
thanks

This has to be the funniest and idiotic statement i have ever read.

Your right about the DAC part, The cdjs use different wolfson DACS, but not the pitch part. The CDJ-350 has 02.% accuracy just the same as the cdJ-2000. We all know there is hardly much difference between a 500 DAC and 1,800 one.

Posted by DJ RANN on Feb-19-2014 02:25:

Yes, but in CDJ's you're actually talking about a $5 DAC chip or a $20 DAC chip at most between those two models.

Clay is somewhat right about them lasting, at least for their current models. I still have a CDJ500 kicking about somewhere - yes, the giant square one from the mid 90's and it still works. That thing has done at least 5,000 hours and been treated like shit yet all of the buttons and jog still work.

Or I've got a CDJ800 in my current setup and the cue button is going dodgy at under 1,000 hours. Still though, that's not bad for a cheap consumer piece of equipment.

@EVO - I know what you mean. I've been playing with both traktor and serato but I hate having to look at a screen. The budget pio offerings such as the CDJ350 are crap though compared to full jog wheel CDJ's. If you don't mind the smaller jogs then fine, but otherwise, just save up and get some CDJ850's or 900's.

Posted by The Dark NINJA on Feb-19-2014 02:33:

I don't ever use the Jog Wheel for mixing.

food stamps + welfare = cdj350

Although that's a pretty low price for that deck, that's $3400 (before tax) for two fucking CDJ's.

I don't exactly when pioneer brainwashed people in to thinking they needed to spend that kind of money to mix two tracks together but you have to give it to them, they know how make suckers.

i got my pair with out tax. DJ deals doesn't add tax. I have ableton and i do promos there too and to m5g's. I got these because I like to feel comfortable right before my gigs and I make plenty of money on my own. I guess you mean the people that can't afford them that have plenty of skills.

I've got m5g's too and a $1500 mixer and even though I have the money, I just can't justify spending $3k on CDJ's for home use.

What I'm getting at is that Pioneer have gradually upped the price on their models so that if you want the flagship devices that are what you'll find in clubs (although in most cases completely unnecessary) you have to spend thousands.

If Technics were able make the industry standard (not to mention kit that will last 30 years of use) for $1000 a pair, you have to realize that Pioneer are just fucking with us.

It's no secret that I'm not a fan of their business model which is based of endlessly releasing new models to make sheep go buy the latest toy.

I just want CDJ's that have a pro jog wheel, good pitch resolution and USB access. I don't need all the other bullshit toys, but for that I have to pony up at least $2k for a hunk of plastic that won't last one tenth as long as my M5G's.

My m5g's have appreciated in value. bought for 6 or 700 each new. have had them 5yrs. could sell for 800. new ones are like 1000-1600 now since they stopped making them.

I bought the cdj1000mk3 many years ago for 950 each from agiprodj. i had them 3 years and sold them for 1,000 each (in flight cases)

pioneer gear doesn't appreciate in value anymore tho.

the ddj sz might be up your alley. i might buy one to do mobile gigs

thanks man, i dont think i can justify shelling out for even 2nd hand 850s for occasional mixing - guess id have to try out the 350s and see what the jog wheel is actually like

holy shit, my nexus 2000 came in the mail. Quality is amazing, mixing was never so much easier than using my tech 12 m5g's on traktor. I'm selling my turntables fuk that, i don't need this shit. If i ever wanna go back the turntable route i might consider reloop.

Yeah, Techs have always held their value. When I left the UK for the states, I was able to sell them for a profit and then buy the m5g's for less (because the US is cheaper for this stuff). Win all around.

Then you got really fucking lucky. Right now there are half a dozen PAIRS of good condition CDJ1000's Mk3's going for less that a thousand. Yes, less than $1000 for TWO.

The CDJ1000's took a massive hit when Pio brought out the CDJ900 which was in the same price bracket but had USB, LAN, Quantise etc.

I was thinking about getting 900's but I'll probably wait until Pio stupidly bring out yet another CDJ model so that the 900 drops in price even further.

I just can't do the controller thing. I've played with that and it's just too much of a toy. I also want to integrate with my M5G's and it gets messy trying to do it with that. A mate of mine was between that unit or CDJ's - he was looking at $1500 more to go the CDJ route but when he played with them side by side he said the difference in feel was a no brainer and bought the CDJ's.

That's all true. I've still got an old CDJ100 and although it did go a bit strange a while back (wouldn't hold pitch so I have to replace one of the PCB's) the buttons and rest of it are still going strong. It'r got to be at least 12 years old - I've had it for 7 years and I bought it second hand off a guy who had found it in his attic when he bought an old house. Even those were built pretty well.

Try the 350's and if you like them, then they;re still decent. I'm probably going to sell my 800 and get a pair of used $850's - if you get lucky you find a pair for around $1000 which I'm willing to pay for just occasional home DJ use. I just can't go down to a 350 because once you've had the proper job wheel, you can't go back.

I remember buying 2 900's and was so disappointed with them. I bought them brand new from guitar center here in hallandale florida. The sound quality was so tiny and puny like maybe because of the DAC it uses. I sold them instantly. Now the nexus however has an upgraded Wolfson DAC and better power supply. I'm in love with it (nexus) and thank god i didn't settle down for anything inferior.

Dude, I said this in the other thread, but it's in your mind. Don't get me wrong the 2000N are great but the difference in audio quality is minimal, to the point I don't believe you could ID them in a blind A/B.

They both use wolfson DAC chips - one is like $3 more than the other. It's all solid state tech from the same company, even using the same chip maker.

You're also listening to (most likely) badly mastered trance in your bedroom (albeit with some very good kit). It's not like you're monitoring an SACD of Royal Philharmonic recorded at Air Studios with an array of vintage Neumans.

I know someone who's selling a pair of his, but I have no idea if he'll consider overseas shipping. You can ask him though

850's are a good choice btw. Solid piece of equipment.
