-- ableton live + mixer
ableton live + mixer
sorry if this question has been asked. jus wondering whats a decent way to set up mixing hardware with ableton live. I know you need a midi controller but can u connect a good mixer aswell?? thanks
ecler nuo 4 has got midi control, i'm pretty sure there are also other great mixers with midi-control.
If your mixer hasn't got midi control it's not possible to use your mixer in combination with ableton live.
thanks man thats exactly what i had in mind to get.
you can use a mixer ... a normal DJ one without midi...
but you have to have a card with at least 4 single outputs (2stereo)
Let's say you mix in track 1 and 2
You set ouput of track 1 to 1/2
and track 2's output to 3/4
then connect the corresponding outs to the mixer ins...
voilá...you mix with your mixer...
atleast it should work (never tried!)
it works.
but you still tend to spend too much time clicking around on a mouse if you dont have a midi controller.

yes, I just wanted to point out this possibility because I thought the guy might have a DJ mixer...so he could use that, untill he gets a midi controller...indeed ableton + midi controler is the best

Originally posted by MikeyN yes technically it works, but you'll only be manipulating the sound going in through the mixer, any changes you do by moving the eq's wont show up on screen but will be audible, also, like the above posts read, you'll still be doing a lot of clicking, for cueing and such, and its easier to get a midi controller, or a mixer with midi capability, Nuo 4's For the win. |
There's a VERY good reason to use a regular DJ mixer with Ableton:
The MIDI controllers currently on the market SUCK for mixing (except for the Xone 3D). They all feel cheap, are plasticy, they don't have "detents" for knobs you assign to EQ's, crappy faders, no nice rotary faders, etc.
I have a Xone 92. I really like mixing on my 92, so why not use it?
Disadvantages?
1. The movements you make on the mixer aren't recorded in ableton.
2. You can only "mix" as many channels as you have outputs connected to the mixer (though you can still mix sources together in Ableton itself and have that feed into one channel on the mixer).
3. You still need a midi controller to launch clips, control effects, etc.
But I think it's a decent compromise. The NUO4 is probably the next best mixer with midi on the market, followed by the DJM-800 (which looks great on the surface, but try to set it up and you realize the limitations of using it as a MIDI controller AND audio mixer).

I decided to but the M Audio Audiophile Firewire and the BCR 2000. I'm supposed to be receiving my Firewire PCI card tomorrow, so I don't have the full experience yet. The Audiophile is still in the box and I'm waiting for the PCI card to arrive and open it. I have however hooked up the BCR2000.
Sure it feels plasticky and somewhat cheap. The value you get for it (I payed 130$) is very good. You can manipulate and launch clips, effects etc right there. There are presets so you can save the configurations in a breeze, and not limited to 24 knobs. I just want to say I like it and it is much better to "feel" ableton rather than just fooling around with the mouse.
