Will do it for 58.5 cents per sentence.

For a limited time...Only the feedback you want. Need a 2 paragraph ego-stroke on how tight that 7-layer kick of yours is? Or maybe just a short 2 word response on how "you suck". 1/2 of proceeds go to the "Hungry producers" charity fund.

I liked the separate threads because it made feedback voluntary. When it's obligated, it just causes people to try to get it over with. When we had separate threads it was a situation where people knew that if they wanted good feedback they had to be an active citizen of the forum. Otherwise, people would just ignore their post. People are way more likely to comment on posts by names they recognize.

So i'd been trying to brush up on my music theory & was trying to write some chord progressions. What started off from three chords turned into a whole track. I'm currently on vacation & don't have access to my studio, so the mixdown probably needs work. Would love to get some feedback:

It has a nice feel to it, the bass sound is great- cutting through rather nicely. It's interesting that although this isn't mastered (i.e. limited to the max) it sounds rather sweet.

I will say it is lacking a bit of complexity (especially in the percussion), so becomes rather predictable. But the elements are good and musically it certainly has potential.

It's at it's best at 3:20 - might be good to listen to anjunadeep to see how they keep interest over a simple long progressive track on their releases.

decent stuff and worth a listen. It sounds like a holiday!

same here, and this topic is rather unwieldy - and doesn't get searched..

It's rather well produced - sounds smooth and sweet - but that's the easy bit really, as getting this to really bang will take a bit of mastering work. the mix feels right at the moment, but those hats are going to get a bit grating when you limit/maximise this. Musically it's quite basic and certainly progressive. I can't help but think it needs a strong melodic element to push it upwards.

I enjoyed listening

really liking this - it sounds expensive!
not much to criticise here - all praise omnisphere?

except at 1:53 the timing goes a bit weird for a bar..

and it doesn't get to where I want tit to get to, which is dropping back just to thekey elements for a little while

this is the track I was reviewing above mate - this topic makes life difficult..

Mostly minor changes, trying to be careful with this one...

- Beefed up the kick, beefed up and separated the bass[es] slightly.
- Added slight resonance boosts to the Sine-lead and it's respective layers. (really loving how this sound turned out)
- Added a bit more dead-space in the buildup. (more silence really adds to that loudness factor without actually having to increase the volume )
- Added variation to the main melody. (Currently AAAB...subject to change if I come up with any new/interesting ideas for the melody)

(a few of these changes aren't even audible...thanks soundcloud -_-)

Debating whether to break it down and end it as it is, or try a bridge/rebuild with some variation. Not really sure what to do with it now. (maybe take another break from it for awhile)

Anyway, here's what I got...Really diggin' this one, so...Feedback welcome, naturally.

Pleasant uplifting prog.

A bit dynamically squished for my taste. I'm not really a fan of what the loudness war does to tunes and the effect it has on the dynamic range is quite visible in a meter and audible when you turn it up. You can hear how stuffy and compressed it is at high volume.

Why does the intro need more work in your opinion? Seems like a pretty standard intro. Seems like enough room to mix in from a previous track. Sometimes, less is more.

Chord prog. at 1:31 is nice, bass plays along well here. Like the intricate accents that happen around 2:05, could maybe use more of this in the first breakdown to open up some space. The instruments are well chosen and fit well together. The melody is nice...

A bit mixed on the release into the main theme at 2:47. It works of course, but it just feels very matter of fact. Could maybe use a little more flavor, possibly a split second before the tune kicks back in at 2:50 or slightly more put into the release. It is the main theme that it's leading into.

Like the interplay between the overdriven saw and piano at the main theme, and they're leveled nicely here. Quite a nice mix of melody and harmony here. Energy at 3.20 is good.

Why the removal of the kick at at 3:32? Absolutely kills the energy before the breakdown even happens. Release felt a bit weak at 3:45 due to this I think.

Also not sure what to make of the faux break-down that follows it at 4:14. This is the point where I felt a bit pulled out of the track. The flow felt kinda broken here as I was expecting an actual break-down with some added interest, rather than quick rehash. It works, but didn't seem to really add as much to the tune. (except for 40 more seconds)

Overall good work though, I enjoyed it. Nice tune. gl with it.

Pretty much agree with theterran, however I'm not a fan of the lead at 2.50.. Its the layer you add when the beat kicks in. I like its sound it just don't fit with the existing plucky sound imo. At 3.20 it changes (the plucky sound removed or filtered) and sounds much better. At 4.20 again it's sounding different and I don't think you need all that variation. Could also maybe work on the transition at 1min, seems a bit sudden or weak if that's the right word?

I've had a few listens now and I'm liking the track, but take up looneys offer to see if you can improve. Can't do any harm?

Posted by optik on Jun-23-2014 10:48:

thanks for listening guys, really appreciate the feedback! - the things you've pointed out I agree with and will fix the track tonight.

Really appreciate the time!

looney - would appreciate your melody, it's a somewhat generic chord progression I think and I was nicking bits of my own track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yvc6UgsEV0w
to give it a bit of an old school trance feel - would be interesting to hear your take on it, cheers

thanks guys

Thanks Toby for your good word - appreciate.

This WIP may or may not be finish as I like to use this type of exercise of working on different type of genre to reset my overall perception of the music lol -> if you know what I was talking about -> after spending lots of time working only in one particular type of music you literally will become handicapped over time

Overall very pleasant listening experience Toby -> really like this very sooth/tender layer of melodic softness (in part 1:30 ~ 2:50) and follow with vibrant and energetic/dynamic part right after it.

At 4:45 I wish I could here some additional melodically structure part (where I think L4C is referring to) which would overall increase attractiveness of this production.

The rest is simply your own vision for this track and how I would like to see this track progress doesn't really matter

Cheers,

Darek

How many bass lines you have right from the beginning?

One of them sounds like has some artificial deformation on last two notes (sounds like the mid range one) but is gone in second part of your track.

1:48 - may have to get a slightly better transition into a break (in my opinion) - the rest has really good potential if is taken right direction - so far so good !!!

Thanks for the feedback bro, you're right about the percussion that's one of my weakpoints. Will work some more on it as i also feel some parts need a little more.

2 basses.

1st bass is saw-square, syncopated offbeat 'and' notes with 1/16th pickups.

2nd bass is sine-square, straight offbeat quarters.

What you are probably hearing is the first bass's ghost notes. There are 2x 1/16th notes with very low velocity at the end. I imagine it has something to do with the filter-in and resonance of the patch. The other thing the adjusted velocity does is add emphasis on the 2nd and 4th down-beat in the measure. No actual deformation from plugins or otherwise though.

There are a few bassline parts though...One of them has a solid quarter at the end, one a short quarter, and the driving line has the low velocity 1/16th roll. These are added for extra flavor...Since I'm running a single note bassline, it would be even more bland without it.

My whole goal with this tune is to use simplistic elements and sounds, with simple chord structures, to produce something dynamic/spacey. It's definitely not the most active of listening pieces...better for doing other things while it plays. But that's the reason for the simplicity. If it's too active, I end up stopping w/e I'm doing to listen to the song...I didn't want that so much. So yeah, to sit and just listen to it would/should be a little boring. I do plan on spicing it up a little more, but I'm still hunting for the right sounds.

Better transition in what way? Less abrupt? More sound FX used to spice it up? I kinda like the way the high-passed perc line creeps in and kills the energy as everything else peels off. It also keeps with the simplistic nature of the track.

It also ended up being a really interesting percline so I wanted to use it to drive a breakdown and have a section for it.

Cheers for the listen and feedback Darek. o/

Yes, this is what I was thinking about something (and that could be some crafty sounds FX) to spice up this drop a bit.

And sorry that took me so long to respond, just really busy last two days.

a bit of an update to it - fixed the transitions I think, cut it down a little, produced a bit, played with the bus compressor and got it to drive a bit more.. i'm toying with a vocal on the breaks later on, but in the mean time I added bass through them to keep a bit of the drive

cheers for the comments before, very useful.

cheers

this one is a vocal track but i am killing the bass line . Still just sound design at the moment but its pretty much done in my head.

well all the tracks I'm doing are vocal in that it is a artist group , not a producer. Jamiroquai meats daft punk. And yup , i will be singing. Basically just modern funk. i guess that qualifies as ddm.

All richie patches from scratch

normally i wouldn't show this but was up all night and everything just came together including the lyrics

and i have the best artist name ever. 8 months till launch. I plan to hire a ghost dj.
