Yeah, it stops the bass being too exaggerated (position of monitors)

Have you noticed how the left is in the corner, with both blocked, and the right, with only one blocked. I got this tip from the Alesis manual, which states that if you are positioning the monitors, blah, blah, then block ports. Alesis. not me.

Hope this helped and it works for me because I am used to the way the monitors sound now. I also try my tracks out in the car, on my hi-fi, little portables, etc to get them sounding OK.

i always block the ports of front ported speakers - otherwise you're going to get double the bass. Good for a good fat sound but no so good for producing.

True, without the ports blocked the bass sounds too full on and seems to muddy everything

Thanks for being with me on that one mate...

Nobody in particular; it's actually a rendered (line art maybe?) drawing. I stole it from here: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/16150353/

I finally have new speakers and added some acoustic foam to kill the early reflections. Speakers are standing on candy boxes for now.. Must get proper stands soon. I also tried the right side rack for the table.

Posted by david.michael on Jun-29-2006 19:42:

Wow, nicely done!

Did you build that desk??

I need to get the acoustic foam too.

Thanks Yes I built the desk. There are some pics I took earlier on this thread..page 57.

I like the foam. It's good for nasty reflections and echoes but shoudn't be used too much if there's no treatment for lower frequencies.

Mikk, that's lookin sweet.

Yes, it's Behringer MX2642A mixer. ATM only used as volume control for speakers (through 2 track return), headphone amp, and playing synths when computer is off. All the cannels became very unreliable after a minor accident with cola... So I don't record through it. Also seems to somehow color the sound.

mikk: i like the desk man... it looks comfy... nice pro looking studio u have there

staticblue: yours is much simpler looking set... but it produces monstrous tracks *salutz* i've been following your tracks man i'm your fan! your plucks inspired me to make my own

Posted by Derivative on Jun-30-2006 10:45:

Those are Dynaudio BM5as right? Cool because I am finally getting a pair of those next week. Ill be using boxes for stands for a while too

Posted by Mikk on Jun-30-2006 12:02:

Thanks LENG! I tried to make the desk as confortable and usable as possible. It's actually inspired by the desk of some of my favourite producers

BM5A's yes. I chose them over Mackie HR624's and some others at the same price range. You won't be dissapointed. I never believed in any burn-in period for speakers before but I do now. The sound will get even better with time.

Posted by LENG on Jun-30-2006 12:07:

i'm sure you like your desk very much... because it's custom made to your liking! i bet you must be enjoying doing music in such a great environment, your own territory

Posted by nytrox on Jun-30-2006 12:10:

@ mikk: respect, nice setup man!

one thought: on the pidtures your monitors seem to stand pretty close to the wall, this may cause sound problems.

Posted by LENG on Jun-30-2006 12:13:

nytrox: how is that so? i have mine (not monitors though, altec lansing vs4121) sticking a few inches from the wall...

Posted by Derivative on Jun-30-2006 12:54:

Bass reflections off the wall. Mikk has some acoustic foam on the walls behind his monitors and bass traps so it shouldnt be too much of a problem provided they are positioned correctly. Wouldnt be able to tell without knowing the dimensions of the room. BM5s are rear ported though so that may or may not be a problem.

Posted by Mikk on Jun-30-2006 16:46:

Yeah, they're pretty close to the wall. It's a matter of available space ATM ant the room is quite nicely controlled on lower frequencies too. I tried moving them further away from wall and the difference isn't big at all
