i think thats pretty cool dude nice bass and cool kind of retro feel. One thing is it might be a good idea to learn a bit more music theory, cos your stuff tends to be quite musical so this might help you piece it together

Thanks Chris, yeah, i should learn more theory, often i just hit the wall because of music theory ignorance.

I am the same way. As an excuse, I try to tell myself it gives me more musical liberties doing so /grins

Actually Gordan, that bass is pretty slick. Not sure about the chiming higher floating tones however. Personally, I love these kinds of approaches. You have a solid bass and kick combo, you could take that many different directions when choosing those next notes that are melodies or higher freq tones. Personally, I'd go with something 2 or 3 octaves lower in order to hit that mid range freq. Maybe an arp? Rolling bass line? At any rate, basic yet solid foundation. You should roll with it man.

-------------------------------------------------------

So, I got time to sit down and do some development on some tracks.
Not going to ask for specifics in order to compare my thoughts with another ear.
First track was something I posted awhile back but it was truly a early wip and still kind of is.
Second is a remix from Kuffdam-We Gotta Go. It is an older song that I had never heard of before. I was issued as a challenge from a friend. Back then , he told me I get to use only 4 single stems. I never completed it or even thought about starting it because at the time, I had no idea how to even approach it.
Needless to say, I stumbled across the folder and remembered all of that and thought...hmm Maybe I will take a stab at it and this is what it has become. Needs some cleanup but otherwise, kinda digging it.

Yes, but now it's maybe time to help our souls with some good old theory

Conarium tester is a bit to sharp, metalic for my ears. There is a lot of white noise on pad. Other sounds tends to be pretty sharp too. I like the idea and melody. At 3:28 you introduce more elements which distracts main melody imo, but brings nothing to progression.

Remix sounds nice, very pleasant for listening.

TRack 1 I liked from the point when the plucky synth comes in, and up to the drop. I kinda feel you've got a relaxing melody and palette there, so was hoping it would be all Anjunabeach, but at the drop and just prior it got a bit noisy and messy for me mate. Just the kind thing I end up doing - over-egging it some, lol.
The mix at the drop is not working buddy.

Track 2 nice and relaxing. It needs either some vocals / vocal stabs / samples or some kind of standout arp or something to give it a finished personality.

Great kik n bass groove.
I think a job for u to focus on now is trying to get cohesive synth lines - for me personally what you have here is sort of shop-noodling synths. We all make this mistake a lot IMO, myself most definitely included.

Close your eyes and imagine being in a synth shop, and if your track sounds like someone noodling over a beat, then for me personally it's not working. It can work in expert hands - someone like Underworld could pull It off but I cant.

I hope this rambling critique makes some kinda sense, lol

Hehe, yes it makes sense, thanks. But i like noodling. Sometimes noodling goes well, mostly goes bad .

Here's a different take on previous bassline.

I totally agree that this deserves some vox and it would greatly improve the track. Contemplating it hard.
Got a final mix as it needed a few elements and some cleanup

Tried my hand at some SevenLions style pad ducking. Took 3 compressors all sidechained with low action and a huge release. Can't remember if 7L said or not but I think he said he uses a gate as well to get those long tails.

would like it more if you had gone with a darker vibe on the chords and stuff! would make a good dark track for techno.

Trap music / Social media Troll song

Hey guys, trying to pull off a trapmusic/social media troll on this girl from Instagram. This isn't my usual genre and apparently it's more experimental than trappy but still love to know what you guys think. With some feedback I might change it to be more full on trap but I think it sounds pretty fresh as is. LMK! <3

I like it till 2:07, nice filtered piano at start.

That experimental track is cool!

I'm glad you think so but the reason I chose trap was because it would reach a greater audience her age, but I feel like I may have gone a little over board on the experimental ascpects, to do a proper troll i wanted top notch production so you can kind of experience the way I snipped together and edited all the vocal and sample parts.

I just want a nice, legit troll with great production value.

Posted by gordan100 on Oct-28-2017 22:43:

I was playing with the arpeggiator. It's the same 4 chords pattern in 3 different instances, and original without arpeggiator. Mix is a bit crowded in places :/

I'm not really into trap music so i would not know if it's too much experimental, sorry

Rich, mix sounds good. It's a nice groove, but it needs more imo.

I don't listen or lke track but as a 10 year vet production I Can handle myself pretty well through genres.

mostly I just want to know if the production quality stands out,a nd which holes in the mix I need to fix.

IMO there are some good ideas in there, but it doesnt really feel like a cohesive track in some ways. around 3 mins it starts to sound a bit confused/loose to me, almost like 2 tracks mixing into one.

i lke the piano chords at the beginning but they do soun very mechanical, as opposed to natural, like they are being played, perhaps what you were going for

mix wise i feel like it could benefit from being cleaned up quite a bit, especially the resonant "stabby" synth the drums are a bit lacking in high end, and the mix could be wider in parts too. Stlye wise its not really my cup of tea. Would defo be a good idea to A/B similar tracks if you are not already doing that..

sorry that's not very positive. obviously its only my opinion but i think its worth giving your honest opinion if you are going to do this...

did this a while back but only just mixing it down now, so any thoughs would be welcome, particularity on mix down

Such a decent track Chris great sound, very pro

My only nit pick would be to really amp down the synths when the vocal is first appearing maybe for at least 30 secs or more, to give contrast

Posted by Richard Butler on Nov-03-2017 18:49:

So I'm finishing up this in my drive to get stuff completed

Any crits?
