I just got my set-up properly midi'd up meaning I now have 3 analog machines running (not used all 3 in an actual track yet) to include a Kick Lancet on kick duty. I love the dusty analog sound of the kicks from this but when I used it previously I think you said not enough heft, but when I am layering it with sampled kicks, dunno it's somehow mot sounding how I want

So anyway, yeah, what are you using on kick duty? Your kicks always sound so rounded and understated, yet beefy

no hardware for kicks

Past 6 months im using kicks from either WA Drum Tools 2 or Sample Magic Drum Hits 1/2
Occasionally might layer with a subby kick from battery 4 library

Almost always have fabfilter Saturn on the kick channel, default setting, increase the drive knob to usually between 25 and 60%, depending on how much of that sound i want - then i boost the 80hz band on trident EQ, not much but just to give it that thump

thats it really :-/

cool stuff rich. i really admire how you (and EVO) can bang so many tunes out - i mean you must do about 5 - 10 in the time i do one

my honest opinion, for what its worth - id like to see you take one of the strongest ones (like imo that recent Dnb one or the psy trance one i commented on before) and take a couple of weeks - or however long it takes - really refining it, polishing it, referencing etc etc then youd have a totally pro tune ready to send off to labels or whatever.

I might say something similar for EVO, such a great sound and skills - id love to see that...

IMO as ever though dudes....

^^ thanks chris, no real interest in record labels personally

Yes you are correct but let me give a bit of perspective;

When I came back to producing I found it reasonably easy getting stuff signed if I bothered to send out but I had this moment where I realised I wanted to get to a level I was genuinely satisfied with.

So this for me means making a bunch of potentials and then going back to 2 or 3 tracks I think have good potential based on feedback and finishing them

I am open minded as to when this point is (if ever) reached

I used to take months over a track and sweat blood to get them finished but kept later looking back thinking I should have left them alone and come back to them.

I will deffo finish some of these, quite likely the 2 u mentioned.

Massive amounts of tracks are released, but I kinda don't see the point as for me the majority are pretty crude although can be great sounding in terms of engineering.

I too turn out pretty crude tracks but I don't see the point in putting them out there.

BUT you have pricked my consciousness a bit and it may spur me on to finish some now - which was my plan anyway, but there's nothing like a jolt from a third party

Howz your DnB track coming on?

My advice re DnB - masses of tracks all sound the same - this really comes to light when at something like a BBQ I notice. Friends say to me all they can hear is a drum beat.

sure mate. yes its easy enough to get a tracks signed to a small label and sell a couple on beatport, but getting on a bigger label, thats a whole different ball game (which i wouldn't know anything about as i haven't got stuff to that standard yet so wouldnt even bother sending out

the Dnb track has got potential, im still working on it cheers. its tough will post up at some point but got too much to do atm

like i say i admire people who can turn out loads of tracks - even if they arent completely finished. I am very slow!

actually, seeing as you asked - this is the second drop im working on (different from 1st drop)

Rough and ive not done any processing apart from some eq, some dynamics on the master bus,no reverb, no saturation or distortion yet. ith fm you can get the sound pretty gnarly coming straight out of fm8

what do you reckon?

Ta mate. all the sounds (bar the sub) are fm8, straight out of the synth. i would recomend it for drum and bass although its a really steep learning curve, ive been playing with it for years and only just making good sounds

what you rely on a filter for with subtractive synthesis you can do, and more with FM. oh and its got a filter!!!! sick

yeah i went for a more subby bass, i like those techno tracks that dont really have a bassline per se

quick snip of this one

Posted by gordan100 on Oct-08-2017 02:16:

Nice foundation for a track. Very clean on headphones, love the sounds. Percussions reminds me on Underworld - Dark and long train running

was out on friday night, dj played a track at the start of the set, just the kick and the sub working, it just sounded so good as there was so much space in the track, nothing was forced - i try to aim for that sound but find that it is quite difficult to achieve whilst keeping the track interesting
