For occasional mixing you really can't go wrong. That is if you don't want to use the smaller jog wheel on the 350's (which also are really solid cdj's).

I guess you'll just have to look at your budget. I've mixed on 350's, 800's, 850's, 900's, 1000MK3's, and 2000's. The 850's (and to be honest the 350's too) match up really well compared to the higher models given it's extremely manageable price tag (especially used). If push came to shove, I would honestly buy an 850 over the others so I could dump more money on a better quality/newer mixer.

As Rann said, if you don't mind the smaller jog wheel, you can't beat 350's. If the standard Pioneer jogwheel we've all come to love is something you can't live without though, I recommend the 850's.

I can only offer a small piece of personal experience, echoing chris1011 for the most part. The CDJ 2000 models are great because of the size of the platter and minute control, but only a minimal upgrade compared to the costs.

The mixer they run through, that's where I have found the most value. Speakers more so, but that's another topic.

I recently posted a thread asking the reason for a CDJ 2000 vs. a laptop (link), and while you're looking to go hardware, maybe it's not the player itself you're frustrated with, but using software and soundcards instead?

What feels best for you?

thanks chris and lith - as i said im fed up using traktor or ableton to put together mixes - i want to go back to using decks again
think i will go for a set of cdj 850s later this year - thanks
