cool

Man I know I'm going to drive people crazy with this but there is another famous classic synth that sounds even better than synth1 (imo) and I had downloaded this synth years ago then lost it.

I have no idea what the name was but I think it was short, like 3-4 letters, and it was a very odd name if I remember correctly. Anyway the GUI was a nightmare (tons of options were tabed on the top of the synth), it was either very dark gray or black the original skin, and I don't even think you could save presets lol. But I remember that this synth made some of the fattest/hugest sounds I've ever heard before. And it also had a more pleasing tone than synth1. I also remember the unison being more badass than synth1.

I rarely see it talked about on here, and this was like 6 years ago I had it. I am on a mission to find out the name of this thing because even though the GUI was horrible along with not saving presets, it really had a thick and deep sound to it. Anyone have any idea what synth I'm talking about?

[edit:] No way wrong synth wtf lol, I found the wrong one that was not it.

I've not found a free vocoder that works at all well. For once TAF let me down, thiers is dire.

If anyone finds a GOOD free one that actualy works as a vocoder should, I'd be very interested.

Testing freeware is pretty much my hobby

Synths:
1. KX-Synth-X16-V3 - inspired by EMS VCS3. gives nice analog feeling (semi modular architecture with quite big matrix)
2. Martin Lüders Pg8x - JX-8P owners should be happy with this because an author put a lot of effort to create nice emulation.
3. U-He Tyrell N6
4. Morfiki MassTurboTar - nice synth with interesting morphing features
5. Jeremy Evers Atlantis - monster synth with great custom GUI
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=253466
6. Elektrostudio Or2v - inspired by Oberheim Two Voice synth
7. Elektrostudio Model Pro Vsti - inspired by Moog Prodigy and by inspiration I mean the character not the exact emulation

8. Odosynths Unknown 64 Pro - nice Commodore C64 SID chipset emulation
9. VOPM VSTi - Yamaha YM2151 Chip Emulation (Sega Genesis (Megadrive))
with few thousands presets / soundtracks
http://www.vstcafe.com/2010/02/vopm...-emulation.html

10. Spicy Guitar - Free (it was payware) Acoustic Guitar
11. Big Tick Zen - freeware presets manager with tags support. Very nice idea.
12. Elektrostudio esLine - one of the best free recreation of Arp Solina String Ensemble

Wavosaur - audio editing tool with VST effects support and ASIO

Have you heard the sound demo of the one you posted? It sounds extremely nice imo.

Lots of nice looking VST/AUs at http://www.meldaproduction.com/freevstplugins/

Ardour is, as you may know, an open source DAW for GNU/Linux and Mac OSX. Supports AU, LADSPA and LV2 plugins for OSX, and VST for Linux. The VST support is still very much in the alpha stage, and can cause instability in Ardour. Here is however a list that documents useability of many VST's: http://ladspavst.linuxaudio.org/

Traverso is a multi-track audio recording and editing application that purports to be “complete solution from recording to CD Mastering.” Don't know much more about it. WIN/OSX/Linux. Supports LV2 Plugins.

Just read about this project called the Koblo project. Their website is just a logo, so not much info to get there, but it's supposed to be ProTools, Skype and eBay rolled into one
Doesn't support VST or MIDI yet, but it's in the works. Current version is Beta 0.9 and it is available for Windows and OSX. "Oh, but I run UNIX, what if I want to make music too?", you might say. No worries - source code is available. I'll be following this for sure!

For the Mac users at least It'd help if these were labeled because, unless I'm wrong Logic can only use audio units.

EDIT: Has anyone mentioned the Yohng's L1 clone?

Posted by Fledz on Jun-28-2011 04:24:

This could get out of hand easily. Isn't it better to only put in stuff that people like, use and would easily recommend?
There's a tonne of free stuff out there but a lot of it is shit. I'm afraid this list could get too big if we just put down whatever we find.

Bumping this cause it's outdated.

So, here are some new freebies worth checking out:

http://audio-assault.com/downloads.html

I was just checking out this Defacer plugin and it's actually a pretty kickass A/B distortion plugin. These are mostly amp sims and distortion/saturation plugins, but the transient shaper is pretty good. Best of all, all major formats are provided PC/Mac-32/64 VST2, VST3, AU, AAX, RTAS.

BTW, those of you on the lookout for a free or cheap alternative to SoundToys Decapitator might want to check out their Head Crusher Free plugin - it's a lite version of their $40 Head Crusher plugin, which looks to be an emulation of Decapitator.
