-- Why Is Everyone NOT Using Ableton!?!!!
Pages (3): « 1 [2] 3 »
OK, so I guess in saying "Why does'nt everyone use Ableton?!" I was being a bit harsh. I just find the program actually incredibly musical. Basically it expands just DJ'ing into a lot of live remixing and re-editing on the fly (not to sound like a freaking commercial for it...but), and I feel if you really learn the program (read the manual\tutorials) you would see what I mean.
I come from LOVING vinyl and CDJ's to honest and I still use them. But I dont see how it could hurt learning to use what a ton of DJ's I really look up to use ie. Richie Hawtin, Matthew Dear, Sasha and even bands.
I play six instruments, all different. Viola, guitar, keys, percussion and a few other oddities, and if a program can allow me to combine my knowledge of that with performing and remixing live the dance music I love, I find it pretty fresh and exciting.
My 2 cents
Did'nt meen to start a flame war or a "post #262624624672"
but i like the remixes that are allready out there.... if i wanted to produce.... id build myself a studio.

i don't like learning computer programs, so i stick with tt's/cdj's.
i think there needs to be a balance between all the mediums that are available to us. in regards to ableton...havent touched it personally, but great program from what ive read and heard. it just seems as though a lot of people are just using that and only that. just my honest opinion, but you shouldn't hold yourself to once source if you can use TTs, cd decks, etc...almost seems too perfect with the new software thats avaiable. i like my music to have some flaws in them. with the analog aspect, i love hearing dj's screw up a transition but fix it almost immediately...shows that they're working. just my .02
I use it every day.
I rip my wax on the computer and use that to fix the timing by setting a warp marker every 4 beats. Anything more than that and you ruin the swing elements of the track.
Than I use some waves plug-ins to clean up the track and make a nice high quality digital file for serato.
Occasionally I make some dj tools tools or reconstruct and re-edit tracks that I don't like their arrangement.
It's a great tool for edits but I can't do sets with it. Too involved and it requires too much preparation before-hand.
I want to drink and deal with tunes already 'cooked' and cut for me to play.
You can always get creative by sample mixing, dropping acapellas mashing stuff-up e.c.t. but you are still playing other peoples music. Play it as it was intended to be heard.
My 0.02

Originally posted by mikefasssy part of going to see a 'dj' at a club or any type of venue is the stigma of them being able to kind of interact with the crowd, having a sort of stage presence. 2 out of 10 people at a gig may understand what you are doing with those knobs, but the rest think it looks strange, they expected to see turntables, and a box in the middle with lots of cool lights etc. in my experience, seeing a 'dj' play a gig with ableton is boring. somebody hunched over a screen, their midi controller on top of one of the 1200's, glancing up at the crowd every now and then. oh and did i mention them frantically trying to find enough space to use their mouse? now, dj's (cough digweed cough) can have a pretty shitty stage presence as well, but i have yet to see somebody using ableton that trys to go beyond playing good music and really get into it with the people who are there not necassarily because of the music (some of you may not agree with this, but lots of people just like to get fucked up and move around to whatever is coming out of the speakers at very high volumes). ableton is capable of doing phenominal things with music, but its live perfomance factor (ironic isn't it) isn't so great. |

It's because people are inept to change. They'll realize and switch, just like people didn't keep using stone to write stuff down...

1) There is no good controller available.
2) Solid laptops are costly.
Edit: 3) You could look like a nerd.
It would really suck if everyone use the same thing anyway.
ableton does get boring.

When your playing, 90% is only the music. That’s why being a DJ is so special, because we only care about the music we are spinning as well, nothing about fame, or any “skills” to impress and boost the ego (of course it’s a industry so DJ’s do sell out, hence the top 10 DJ’s in the world, AvB, Pvd, Tiesto, all those sell outs). We play to create an hour of non stop damn good music. And the 10% is how you mix those bad boys and make it sound flawless, a never-ending journey and it’s the presence you have over the crowd and if you can control and connect with the crowd.
Now for me, I’ve only seen one live performance with abelton, BT and he used his apple laptop, etc. It was alright; he got into it and danced with the crowd, lots of energy. But its nothing compared to watching a set live with TT’s. Seeing that “Technic”, white label sexy logo, and you see those guys playing an instrument, the turntable, etc, the show is just magnified beyond any abelton set would get. A DJ will always be a DJ. A violinist will always be a violinist. So if this abelton thing gets big I guess it will be a new era, but they will not be DJ’s. So I think.
I like to use turntables, it just feels the best that way. I use CDs too but they don't have the same feel in it. And I use software for mixing too, it's cool but.. I still love my turntables

its like the difference between driving an automatic and stick shift, the auto does the same thing as the manual, but you have more fun with the manual, more control over what's happening. it would seem natural that EVERYONE should have an auto now, but far from it.

No it makes perfect sense to me that analogy
Jus because the technology is new, does not make it automatically better than what went before.
technology does not mean 'better' it just means 'different'
