Do you think I've gone too heavy with reverb and layering of the synths in the drop, THAT I LACK MAKING A VERY FOCEUSED CLEAR ACCESIBLE STATEMENT as a result?

The bass I was thinking was not quite on point, but personally I like the notes and timing used.

just no space in the track at all, i found it hard to listen to as a result - the bassline after the break just doesnt work for me, sorry

like i said earlier, it has potential, i like the progression i think its catchy

nice and loud bro pretty solid mixing but when the drums come in maybe missing a bit of sub? or maybe could notch down a bit in the 1k area a bit? seems a bit over present in that area

yeah doesn't really "connect" with the bass once it drops in, I think the mixing scheme for the break might not work for once the drums come in, i doubt you'd have to re-work much but that's for you to ponder

Just to say that I was worry about your bass line and how it sounds in the mix but after listening for a few times its started to make sense why you driving it the way you do lol - just need a bit more development but so far sounds promising

That's what I was talking about. The breaks at the right moment, and they really fit and feel coherent. You have variation, but consistency as well. The right balance between expected and unexpected/predictable and unpredictable.
Now there are left some little details to work on, and if you manage to overcome them you'll be at 90% ready to conquer.

hehe yeah thanks man, took your advice to heart. this one flowed really well. i actually stopped working on it for a day or 2 then I got SUPER stoned and got back on it, man I love weed

Posted by AlphaStarred on Nov-11-2015 01:31:

weed + music production = win.

well I quit smoking for a while, like a year, and have done a lot of work without it. I didn't want to *have* to smoke weed just to work on music, it is a little unprofessional (unless you're snoop dog), I mean if I could afford to have chronic every day then that might work. but after taking that break, smoking and being able to just work on something without it feeling even slightly forced, is nice. I don't have the before and after but all the nitty gritty and deep work I did on this last track was thanks to that weed, luckily everything just flowed organically.

Posted by AlphaStarred on Nov-11-2015 05:09:

I don't think about the why or the how too much, I just remember having a lot of fun producing while stoned. It would definitely put me into the mood, and of course music, in general, is often more interesting and "trippy" on weed.

Sounds like you are to happy with the compressor on the master/kick-bass bus. That pluck could be fitted better in the mix. The transition from 4:40 is... well... there isn't any xD. The idea of the track ain't bad but don't let yourself lured to the dark side of an over compressed mix, for start.

Is this bass and mix better do u think:

Should the bass note change a bar earlier?

i think the mix is better now - the bass, i cant really hear it properly, in the mid-range and therefore its not really supporting the track enough?

i think you could do better with the track after the break, as one of my mates used to say "if your gonna have a big long breakdown you better make sure it slams back in with something big"

that big lead sound that plays, i was thinking you could just repeat the first 4 notes every bar, while the bass and your other stuff progresses
i think that would give the track a real focus - you could keep the filter closed in the earlier parts of the track and then open it up slightly as the track progresses??

Great calls.

I've changed the bass and the drop, is this more what you had in mind?
EDIT I just made the riser up to the drop less epic and it seems to really make the drop more impactful.

something along these lines is what i was thinking - its just a basic template i put together last 10 mins

the bassline in your track has no drive, there is nothing propelling the track along
i put in a running bassline but a simple offbeat one could also work

so i would start with the bassline, one you have that sorted you can look at the rest of it

I'd have to agree with evo8. The kick and bass are all the way into the background. If they were as solid as the lead sound you would have gotten something quite cool . First of all just put those faders up a bit, then possibly try to accentuate the transients of the kick more so it has more punch. Possibly this could even benefit from a rolling(-ish) bassline.

Although I miss a bit of seperation between instruments and some definition overall, but this is a thing of beauty! I love how spacey it is. Is it finished yet? If you wouldn't mind sharing the track and stemd I'd like to try and give it a spin + try to do a remix on it. I feel inspired because of it haha.

Thx!

Oddly enough I had a powerful Michael Woods rolling tech bass in there just before I took it out and replaced it with what you hear now.
I just felt the rolling bass thing seemed old fashioned.

Anyway I agree bass is not powerful enough so will be working on that before going any further.

And thanks Storyteller for your input.
I should have mentioned this latest version was just thrown together at the last moment and I had not at all looked at mix / kick volume etc yet, but even so your comments are a useful pointer.

This is interesting point you made as I'm trying to understand this mechanism behind lol - I initially just send this to few places (like EDM.com, ....) and day/s after this things start to happening lol - I think if they like your style they will promo your track on social media all over the net lol, even right now I have like 300 plays per hr lol - can't complain

Also, some of those people just joining SoundCloud to create like playlist so they can listen to their prefer music for free - looks like it is a deal for them lol
