Andy Imo: Clean mixes, very tidy sounding, maybe to much. I prefer the second one. The high pitched lead in the first one is a bit thin.

Thanks Evo, Yes agree on that. I love transients but I may be overdoing them.

cool. Too much going on melodicaly or rhythm wise? or both?
Can you suggest what you'd strip back maybe?

Probably is overcompressed a little, I dont ever master my own songs but when I do bounces of test mixes I like to experiment on the master buss with mastering, this way i can hopefully get better at mastering and make mistakes on mixes that arent going anywhere!

Nice track, very dark but I like it. Bass could be a bit stronger for my liking.

Its not bad at all, but you need to get rid of that percussive sound with the funny timing, it messes everything up.

Some harder trance here..

Its like the main idea I guess, its as about as far as I ever seem to get. Maybe I should collab with jp so he can make me an intro

Another Idea but not as hard

dig both of these, cool vibes. The high lead on teh first track to me sounds like its not sitting in the groove correctly, sounds as though its fighting against the pocket of the track. It immediatley made me feel a little awkward and took me out of the track. It sounds as though its playing its hardest notes on every downbeat or there abouts. Maybe play around with its velocities and get it to sit in the pocket and groove some more? Not trying to offend, just being honest! Really dig the chord progression on the second track, I wanna write some stuff like that some day!

You've nailed the sound I think, good stuff on both tracks, now finish them!

One small point on track one, that hi pitched leed that joins the fun after a while is too dry compared to the rest. Add some roominess to it.

MADMUSO

I wanted to bring this track to you here as an example of devastating uplifting trance in case it helps you on your own journey.

This is from 2010 but IMHO probably the most uplifting trance ever made, especially the way he imprints such a strong melody with fantastic variations from about 2.20 onwards. I feel as if in the prescence of genius hearing this;

yeah, ye see this whole mastering thing is the problem, just FORGET about mastering until you have your mixes down. Mastering is to essentially make mixes louder and add a slight little polish here and there

If the mix is subpar then you are just mastering a subpar mix. Concentrate on mixing, which can take several years to get right - then go for mastering.

Thank you evo8 for your great originality of thought. That was really fresh and enlightening from you. My eyes are open now.

thanks mate, thats a great sounding track, one thing I need to figure out is how to get that (what I call) rubbery bass sound, it kinda reminds me of the bass in Gareth Emery exposure (which I f%$kn love).
Its juicy and has bounce to it but doesnt interfere with the kick. You got any tips on how to make that kind of sound? Do people still write this kind of stuff or is it considered dated now? To me it still sounds killer!

Posted by deegee on Feb-28-2015 06:30:

Fuck 'dated.'

Good music is good music. There's a reason DJs still cane stuff like Madagascar and 1998.

I agree 100 percent. In this day and age where people are so quick to point out " hey, that was so yesterday" is it wise for people trying to break the scene to write such music? I often think about crap like that and it does my head in. Having said that, I just write what comes out without thinking of any of that anyway, f it feels good to me I'm gonna keep running with it.

I'm thinking over your bass question, in the meantime........

I have this, quickest thing I ever made. I am determined to keep it simple and not add much to it, as per the thread here on keeping it simple;

Yeah you don't need to add stuff, you may need some deleted though.
The mix is crap at the moment, major work there, and probably some arrangement work with the elements you already have in the track. There are things that jump out a lot, like
28s stutter edit is fucking nasty and needs heavy filtering and/or deletion, couple of sounds at 1:10 way too loud, 2:49 stutter edit too harsh in the top end, needs filtering, etc etc.

Having said all that. The idea of the tune itself is very decent, I mean if you polish it well could be good.

Here's my tune in need of feedback:

Like vercetti said, the tune itself sounds really nice, but some of those effects were really quite harsh, especially on headphones. The vocals don't seem to sit right in the mix either.

That piano line is beautiful. Not sure I'm wild about when it jumps an octave, much better when the lower octave comes back in. Minor quibble though.

For some reason I can almost hear lyrics sitting over this--similar to Everything But The Girl, maybe.

dig this, as a piano player I really liked the piano lines. I would maybe eq a little out of the mids and/or low mids of the piano. The only thing that kinda killed the mood for me was when the 16th note closed hats came in, for me they are to straight adn killed the groove of the song, maybe try some simpler closed hat stuff bussed to a delay to get some kind of cool shuffle and movement that works with the rest of the groove, just doesnt sit right for me. But thats just me!

kinda strange sound on this one, could almost be background for a tv program or something, not sure what else to say about it!

I like the track, specially the piano melody, it has a pop/rock vibe. The call and response, the more dreamy piano does is spot on. The paned cymbals are to much at the front for my taste, the bass is grooving but it is taking to much space in the mix imo.

The interesting part here is break 1 with the piano and stab although one stab note is off the last in the cycle).
That could be a great tune, but the rest for me is not so interesting although I can hear some very decent background atmospheric pad work.

Personally it doesn't grab be in a dance sense but none the less it is quite intriguing with the way you play the bass, the decent percs and the bit crushed melodic lines.

Seems well mixed to me. maybe some sort of vocal stab would lift it some?

I saw the trailer for the new horror movie, Clown, and so just had to make something. This is me at my most comfortable in terms of producing.

The fx are deliberately loud to make people jump.

I will send this one out, any mix crits? I will have it mastered by Raphie.
