I mean sure, your actual sound design is lovely. But there's no there, there.

I'm going to echo the advice I gave you a couple dozen pages back: turn off all the toys. Fire up FL. Load up Sytrus with the Grand Piano preset. Write a melody. Write some harmonies for it. When they start gelling together, then turn on all the gear and start assigning sounds.

Thanks guys. This whip was aiming at trancelover (because of my last WIP I didn't have right) so this is to correct that one) about kick and bass and fitness. Wasn't really aiming at tension or any of that.

Posted by deegee on Feb-05-2015 22:28:

In that case, go back and fix what was wrong with the first one. Doing the exact same thing over and over again is just going to lead you to frustration.

And tension is arguably the single most important factor in any music. Dance music doubly so, trance triply so; tracks don't work without the buildup of tension--rhythmically, through dissonance, repetition, or any of a thousand other ways--and its release. Trance is all about ups and downs, builds and releases, and if you're presenting something as a work in progress (as opposed to a technical exercise) that needs to be a consideration from the moment you begin structuring the track.

I mean, what feedback are we supposed to provide on this work in progress? It's an intro with nice sound design and that's about it. Kick, hat, bass, some floaty FX. If this is actually in progress, there needs to be something there to critique, and it needs to show it's actually doing something.

If all you were doing was a technical exercise in mixing, that's not a WIP and I'd question its fitness or utility in the context of this thread's purpose.

I really dig this. I was easily able to relax and fall into the music. You call it anticlimactic, I call it soothing, almost meditative, personaly I dig these sorts of tracks, especially on albums, they can take the listener to another place for a while.

To be honest, I wouldnt have thought it was a bit loopy if you didnt say anything, kinda adds to the hypnotizing nature of it, but I can see what you are saying, maybe the top end drum elements can be reworked, maybe you can buss those elements together and run them through some sort of crazy plugin that really stuffs with audio and see what comes out the other end?

Personaly I wouldnt bin it, I think the song is there. my 2 cents!

WIP feedback

Hey guys,

heres a song I did a while ago, am thinking about reworking it to bring it up to date. Im so used to hearing this the way it is (because of listening to it a million times) that im finding it hard to get creative with it again. Ive lost that "fresh" listen aspect. So im after mainly songwriting, arrangement sound design advice, etc. Not really mix related stuff cause its a rough mix. Thanks guys,

Dude, if you're going to be so aggressively resistant to any and all criticism, why do you post in this thread?

I think you have absolutely lovely sound design. All your sounds are crisp and clear--someone with better speakers can talk about the nitty gritty of your mixing, but for me it's very well done.

The problem is, that's about all you're doing. Which is a shame, because it sounds to me like there's talent there just waiting to take advantage of the technical know-how.

There's a lot of people here trying to give you constructive and useful feedback on how to improve what you do. Maybe try listening to what we're saying.

madmuso, I'll say the same thing I said in the other thread: the moment your vocals come in, the energy of the track dies. It gets very oompa oompa--maybe sidechaining that's gone too far.

Just went through it few sec ago and really like it but if you are open to some suggestions (ignore if you have a complete different view on it lol) I would recommend to make some adjustment to your remix:

1) 0:54 introduce some massive lead with melody or arp to get you through 1:12 break - because at 1:12 sounds really unfinished/dry.

2) 1:30 you need to add some nice vocal FX to this second part of your track as this would drive (your vocal) this whole track creativity/vibe.

just my 0.02$

Oh, yeah, that part of the song is super unfinished, I was just letting you know there is more vocal stuff coming. I just replaced the file to show the actual artist what I was doing with the chorus but figured i'd point it out to you since you mentioned having more vocals.

Man cmon, i was justing trying to get my kick and bass right because i been doing it wrong ever since, thats all no offense.

Posted by deegee on Feb-05-2015 23:36:

Then wouldn't it make more sense to go back and fix the one that had already been crituqued? Again, if it was just a technical exercise it's not actually a work in progress. It's a useful thing to do, sure, but as I understand it this thread is for stuff that's basically there and needs some polishing.

If you ask me for a kick recommendation - I would go with "Juanathon Targaryen
Paulino - Twin Hearts " - feels like belongs there now

Cheers man.

A complete overhaul of the remix I posted several weeks ago. Not really happy about this yet. Some parts progress too little and others too fast making it feel a bit incoherent to me. But I know where I want to go with it so I'm guessing it will all be alright. Some feedback would be nice.

I like the intro chord progression. That could be the starting point for another remix I think. I think you have really good/pro sound design in just about everything you make including this. Some of your recent stuff like this one, runs on the more "mellow" side I would say. It is good, but not necessarily thaaat interesting to me.

I think these are by and large relatively generic progtrance from about 10 years ago. They are well mixed in my opinion, and the sound design, albeit dated, always seem OK to me. I don't know if I have ever heard a full song from you. I like your kick on A New Dimension (though the title is ironic in that I find the style antithetical to new), and in the production world, that is a pretty big compliment. I'd like to hear a finished track from you, with a little more originality.

It's actually really trendy. Recess by Skrillex, Dillon Francis's stuff, Rock & Roll, One Click Headshot & No Grip by Feed Me, among others. It's called "moombahton" or "mid-tempo." Sometimes even just "110."

There's this early bit at the beginning of the vocals where you chop them up and screw with panning that is just excellent.

Also Seandroid I still really want a downloadable version of Illicit because holy goddamn swearwords, it's so good.

Of course! I was thinking more along the lines of mash-up material for the melodic house/trance DJs.

Probably going to work with a vocalist on something soon. Possibly this one (that's why the breakdowns are kind of sparse) if I determine if it is worth finishing. Also, would be more than happy to collab with someone on the production/mixing for equal credit. Feedback?
