Then about 6 months ago I hooked it back up and started using it extensively. Now I don't think I could do without it. I actually prefer it to some of the multi-channel fader controls such as the Mackie Control unit. It's easy to know which track it is controlling because it can only control a single track, which is the selected track.

One of the neat things about using a unit like that is when you are trying to find the right level for a particular part. I'll usually bring the fader all the way down and then close my eyes and slowly bring it up until the track sounds balanced in the mix. You can't beat that level of physical control. It's got transport controls as well, so that makes it easy to hit record with my left hand while keeping my right hand on the keyboard playing a part. Highly recommended.

nice man!
i know exaclty what you mean about want vs. need: feels good when you get there! I'm pretty much there as well, having all the basics, and have just reached upgrade mode... should be fun getting better gear!

and that's EXACTLY what i thought when i was looking into buying the fader as well, even down to physically picking it up till it fits in from the bottom!

it's on my to-get list now

Not sure which fader you guys are referring to, but I've had a Frontier Designs AlphaTrack for years and I use it like an extension of my hand when I'm mixing or tracking. It's one of those pieces of equipment that has become so integrated into my workflow, that I just take it for granted. It's very flexible as well in terms of creating custom functions, controlling your plugin effects, etc. I highly recommend it.

You lose the rack space, but I felt it was more important to be comfortable while producing.

I have the same desk and I have a love/hate relationship with it for that reason alone - lack of side space and poor ergonomics. Where did you get the "wings" for the polar? how did you secure it?

Also, what are those monitors called and where did you get them? I recall reading a very good review about them in Future Music but unable to find them at that time.

How do you like them? did you compare them to others? if so, which and what won you over?

Is that an Antelope Audio master clock?

Yes, The OCX. Best piece of gear in that whole pic IMHO.

Nice. Did you notice an audible improvement when you installed the unit?

It floored me actually. I've had the pleasure of hearing the 10M attached to it as well which took me from 60% improved to 120%. It's amazing how happy you can make a converter when you introduce a little stability into his life.

Cool, that's good to know. The Antelope has been on my gear list for quite some time, but I keep hearing mixed opinions on whether or not it was worth buying. I may have to bump it up a bit on my list now. Thanks!

I agree that I've seen a lot of back and forth online opinion wise... but hearing it in person sealed the deal for me. It'll do the same for you, guaranteed.

Nice Chris! I think(?) that's a motu you've got under there so that Antelope would make a serious difference.

Did they ever get round to finishing the Showroom in SM?

Total noob here... why is a dedicated master clock needed? The fucking thing costs 1200 bucks! Are there any cheaper but nearly-as-good alternatives available? I wouldn't mind resetting/syncing such a piece of equipment once a day (if it needed that) if I could buy it for say, a Benjamin.

I don't use one and I have quite a decent monitoring/recording setup... but it really depends on *your* setup. I honestly don't know what it's good for but I'm betting that if you know what it does, you're the kind of person who would "need" one.

Just about every audio interface will have its own clock that will probably work fine. I prefer products from MOTU but do have an Apogee Mini-DAC for digital => analog conversion to my monitors.

Oh shit, here we go.........

Seroiusly, check this thread for some good discussion (just avoid the BS from Existo who got banned recently for this sort of behaviour).

Not to hijack this thread, but the overall summary is that some contend that clock introduce problems while others say it improves things.

A (good) clock can improve sound quality... but if you're using an m-audio interface or similar, you'd be better off spending that money fixing the first link in the chain.

Nobody "needs" one in a music-only studio.

Posted by RichieV on Jan-27-2010 18:05:

I have a big ben but I am syncing 2 computers. Like Hexadecimal said, nobody needs it.

Black Lion Audio has a good clock i had one for a few months last year, depends what digital gear you're running though, multiple digital interfaces and outboard should see an improvement, but as has been said, you need to see if your interface will benefit from this(cant polish a turd kinda thing)

Exactly. A good clock does very little in terms of improvement to a decent interface (prosumer and above) by itself - if anything clocks actually introduce more jitter to single units (apart from MOTU units which while having good converters, have relatively mediocre clocks).

With motu, unless you're going to pony up for a very serious clock like an antelope, you're way better off doing an internal clock mod such as the BLA.

However, the moment a you are trying to sync more than one digital device, the need for a clock become much more important, and vital when dealing with different sample rates accross multiple systems.
