Originally posted by montana Lievez, psychill isn't a genre that i'm well invested in but i've listened a little bit to it. usually from the artists and acts that you selected in this one. the mix itself was interesting and it had some really nice tunes but the flow was too patchy to make it stand out. |
Bierheld. A well done mix on most respects. I think my only remark is that I didn't like the last couple of tunes went into a progressive house route, almost trance to a certain degree. There is some of that idea in the Wild Pitch style that DJ Pierre evolved but not that much.
Ziptnf. This is going to be a story, so bear with me. Your mix sprung a memory in me from one of Ishkurs mixreviews from 10? years ago or so. He used to review mixes that DJ's would send him physically and one of them was a Happy Hardcore mix. Ishkur wrote something about the playing HHC that I think is true in most respects but really hits on point with genres where most of tracks are epic and ultramelodic.
What he wrote was that there are two ways of playing Happy Hardcore, either you bang on with one tune after the other or you try to include some extent of subtlety and/or some tension and release. Just try to fight the notion of just banging on one big tune after the other for 60 minutes. I did the latter on the eurodance mix that I did for this challenge a few years ago where it seemed on the surface that I was just banging on tunes after another but I took it down and up at key points even though there was 30-odd tunes in the mix.
And what I'm going to say is while I really liked the mix in the sense of that there were really good music displayed, but it really was just bog ol' anthembashing.
Yeah, for sure, it was. I think the deal was that I wasn't aiming for this to be a mix that had peaks and valleys and all that. I had a dozen or so tracks that I had remembered and loved from more than a decade ago and I wanted to fit them all in. So while I pigeonholed myself into anthembashing, I'm also not really disappointed that's how it turned out either. I wouldn't be playing happy hardcore if I meant to take it super seriously But I see your point, and thank you for the review.
So I listened to the NYHH mix, as it was the one I was most curious about. I was almost expecting some stylistic overlap between it and my mix, but apart from some familiar names it was quite a different beast in the end.
To start with the music, if there's anything it has in common with hard house as I know it it's that when it's good it's really good, but when it's not it can get rather obnoxious pretty quickly.
It started of promising, during the beginning stretch i was really enjoying myself, then I started to cool down during off the hook, which felt a bit sappy to me and when we eventually reached A Walk Through N.Y.C. it was really starting to grate on me.
It did recover with a nifty Missy Elliott remix and a nice chunky percussion workout from James Anderson. At the end didn't really sit right with me, didn't think it needed to be there, but the mix certainly came alive when all of that was set and done and I have no more major complaints after that point.
So, it was interesting but it definitely had it's ups and downs for me. I'm in the middle on whether I really like this music or not, it can certainly be fun but a lot of it didn't have much in the way of interesting percussion for me, which tends to be what I look for in dance music.

I'm working on it! Will have something done by Friday. Just trying to juggle far too many things at the moment (one of which includes a pregnant wife who tends to take priority over pretty much everything else )
Anddd... I'm finished, just gotta do some mastering and run the compressor and all that jazz, but it's getting a bit late and I'm tired. Should have it up for you Thursday night...
...then it's finally time to start listening and reviewing others mixes.

Great to hear, definitely interested in the Hard Trance mix.
And zip, I didn't get around to listen to yours yet, but I'll certainly have something to say about it...
So when I drew downtempo lounge I'll be honest my reaction was a bit meh, I was kinda hoping for one of the more, err, bangin genres to get my teeth in to. Nonetheless, I started listening to the downtempo/lounge channel on di.fm at work to try and get some ideas. As I listened it dawned on me that I actually already had quite a lot of stuff that falls in to this category (or at least in my interpretation of it) and had in fact started putting together a list of tracks for a mix that had never actually got anywhere.
Anyway, the upshot of all this rambling is the below. All of the tracks are real personal favourites that mean quite a lot to me. Whilst I could have delved deeper into the genre to find more tracks that may have fitted together from a mixing point of view, its actually a real pleasure to get these onto a mix I and share it with people. I hope it's "loungey" enough, I think all of the tracks fit in with the lounge aesthetic, even if they may not be strictly categorized as lounge music.

Here is mine, guys. I tried not to veer too far off my idea of Nu Jazz, but it is still a very loose mix as far as both mixing and interpretation go. I'm no Nu/Future/Acid Jazz connoisseur by any means, but I am somewhat familiar with a few labels that put out that sort of music on occasion, so it wasn't too difficult for me to get around once I got started. Not much planning other than that, a couple of hours digging, recorded in one shot. Maybe I'm totally off the mark, I don't know.
A little goodbye-summer ode.

Well, as promised, here is my hard trance mix. To be honest, I wasn't terribly enthused at my chosen genre... usually I've been pretty lucky with these competitions, getting expansive, vibrant genres that I don't know too much about but have a ton of great tracks to be mined (psytrance, detroit techno, tribal). When researching the genre, my start point was the stuff I listened to back in the day that was considered "harder" than your standard trance - Marco V, Derb, Warp Bros., Cosmic Gate, etc... a bit more research and some help with friends who are big fans of the stuff and I learned that the genre's heyday is long past (the majority of my mix consists of tracks from the 2001-2003 period). I'm going to make the assumption that the remnants of this sound got swept up by the all-encompassing "EDM", namely the harder-tinged Dmitri Vegas&Like Mike/Showtek/Bassjackers/Martin Garrix stuff.
Anyways, I did manage to eventually get some inspiration and put out a mix with a lot of songs from back in the day that I still love (Suburban Train is my favorite trance track so I had to include the harder Cosmic Gate remix, always wanted to play out Durban Poison but that's kinda hard when you usually play ~120-130 BPM house, Derb was a massive hit here in NYC), along with a few new ones I found.
Comments welcome! I have listened to the hard house and liquid funk mixes so far, will listen to the others and comment shortly!

Two people left! Lews and jonmitz. I think you two are both done you just need to post it. Try and get it in today, but if you can't, I'll give you til Sunday to make your post.
I've already listened to a few of these but I will post my thoughts on everyone's all at once.
I was given "Industrial" - which I interpreted as very high level description of types of sounds and feelings or emotions evoked by the music. I have interpreted this genre as a style of music that focuses on dark themes, unnerving sounds, and oftentimes harsh and abrasive tones. Beat structure varies greatly, and some songs even have constantly evolving rhythms, which should give the listener some confusion or, to reuse the word, make them feel a bit unnerved.
The general idea, from my perspective, was to make a mix that takes the listener through an, at times, uncomfortable journey, through dark and "mysterious" - and by that, I mean, unnerving passages, with the use of intense sounds, literal industrial (i.e. manufacturing machines) type soundscapes.
How I went about making this mix:
I have been collecting tracks like this for some time. I've never compiled them together in any way and they were scatted throughout my library. I scanned through the mix that zipnif posted to make sure my idea of what industrial was at least on par with what he had in mind - the only additional research I did was to read a thread on the SA forums, which was focused on "electro-industrial", some pages online (including wikipedia), and asking some friends who occasionally listen to "industrial music".
The majority of the time was spent digging up tracks from the past 3 or 4 years, and then downselecting them based on the themes described above, by my understanding of industrial.
I've never mixed this type of music before, and it was a lot of fun.
Genres: Industrial, dark-downtempo/ambient, dark-electronica (both of these are essentially subgenres of industrial based on my understanding)

Nice mix, Bierheld.
Listening to the two mixes on mixcloud first, since i was able to download the others.

Originally posted by Sand Leaper I'm done as well now. This was originally meant to be a fun mixtape-like affair, where I'd go through a bunch of old stuff that has been sampled throughout the years by all genres utilising breakbeats. Then montana messaged me on Facebook and said that wasn't what he meant by funky breaks, but rather "breaks" as pioneered by labels like Skint, Fingerlickin' and Bolshi, which is the type of breaks I was never all that enthusiastic about. So, in the end, I gathered handful of tracks from the mid-late 90s, with a few oddities mixed in for good measure. That's about as fancy as I could be bothered to make the mix this time around. Beatmixing this in Traktor was an absolute nightmare, but it should be tolerable now, after a couple of attempts. Well I've gotta say, the ny hard house mix is definitely way out of my listening range normally. The first few tracks I wasn't really that into, but after 20 minutes it's pretty awesome. I feel like if one of the main goals was to keep the variety up then it's achieved it well. Hmm, what else to say, suffice to say this is going to get a few relistens. It's got a good overall finish as well.
djdk, I'm listening to this on a day where I went to bed at 5 in the morning following a mental night out with DJ Marky playing some stellar drum & bass at one of Stockholm's club. I woke up at 2 in the afternoon and after doing some other business, I took a few listens to your mix and it certainly fit the mood I was in. The trackselection is a bit on the safe side apart from a few unexpected moment but then again this comes with the territory of this kind of thing but the mix had a nice flow to it, so really well done mate.
Sand Leaper, Already said to you on facebook what I thought about the mix on the first listen but anyhow. You certainly took liberties with the genre on the base of your personal likings but fuck if it didn't turn out brilliant because of it. I love how you tackled the mix and played funky breakbeats in all differnt flavours. From the lower bpm big beat that sounds like it could have doubled as an except from The Chemical Brothers mid 90's dj sets in the first part prior the Madlib track you used as an interlude.
Following that there it more sounds like the Wall of Sound label, which I'm a big fan of, and you build up steam quite nicely to the peak points of the classic hardcore sound of DJ Mink and the Bassbin Twins excursion of the Skint-catalogue. After that it cools down quite well and again you played a favourite track of min which is that brilliant Swag remix of Tiny Trendies and it plays out nice right up till the end.
Now onto some of the comments for my mix. Bierheld, (and later on Psyshell) to some respects and on some points I do agree with you. If you want delve deeper into this material with interesting percussion I would look in the direction of where it sort of interchangeable with dark tribal prog house. Because I interpreted from your comments that you didn't like the moments of NYHH which just focuses on the distorted organ-sound and was straight uplifting. I could have easily played more of that in the mix but I like that stuff in parts. And in a setting where it's made for home-listening, I would say it benefits when it's played as layers and my version of Traktor just has two decks so it makes it more difficult.
But I certainly agree that some of the elements of this music needs to be taken in chunks which is why I chose to go through few of the different flavours of NYHH. From the beginning where it touches on it's Garage roots to where it's more uplifting and starts to incorporate the tribal loops but has more focus on the distorted organ. Later where the focus is more on the drums and then some of my favourite moments when producers took it the extreme and just made these balls to the wall anthems.
So, I was definitely drinking when I recorded this, and, to my ears at least, it's rather obvious by the end. Hopefully not too distracting
Anyways, some of the tracks in this mix are acid, but not techno, and some of the tracks are techno, but not acid. Despite that, I'm rather happy with how this turned out. I didn't want to go the easy route and just play a ton of classic acid techno tracks, but I also definitely wanted to play some oldies. This mix ended up being a bit of a compromise between old and new. Hopefully people will enjoy it
